Principal Updates
What is the importance of a school mission? A school mission helps drive all we do on a daily basis. Our mission impacts the decisions we make from resources, to instructional strategies, to the integration of our school culture and climate. At JMS, our mission has a huge impact on how we support your student in achieving the highest levels of success both personally and academically.
A critical part of our mission is the relationships and connections we foster with our students. We strive everyday to make these personal connections to make a difference in their lives. However, we can't do that alone. We need parents as part of our team to assist us in making sure our students stay connected to their school. We realize we are navigating many challenges, as we facilitate learning in a two-day hybrid instructional model. It makes those personal connections even more critical. Please make sure your child is accessing their classes virtually each day when they are not attending in-person. Encourage your child to use Wednesday office hours to meet with teachers. I am optimistic our situation will get better soon and we may see all of our students in-person everyday. In the meantime, we appreciate your support in getting your child connected, so we can have the impact we all want us to have.
Media Center News
The JMS media center is so glad to see students back in the building. We don't get to have them in groups as we once did, but we will take what we can get! Students have books available to them both digitally as well as the physical copies. Please encourage your student to check out the vast array of books on Sora (which is in Classlink in the Electronic Library) as well as reserving copies through Destiny. The media center will deliver books to kids when they are here in the building. We can also make arrangements for our full time virtual students as well. Contact the media center with questions. The newly nominated MASL books can all be found in Sora. We will have physical copies of all the nominees soon. Our order has not yet arrived. Please encourage your students to peruse these books and choose one to read.
We are asking (ok, begging) to have students return books. We are missing a lot of books that were checked out last year. Please help your student find and return these. We would like to spend out budgets on new books rather than replacing them. Books from ANY CPS school can be returned to ANY CPS school and will be returned to us. We appreciate all the help we can get in this great endeavor.
The media center likes to be noticed. Each day in the student announcements and on the JMS Schoology Course we post fun stuff. We have fun facts and celebrations of whatever national day it is. We have jokes posted on the board outside the media center as well. We really are the coolest place at JMS!

Mrs. Kiley's Book Recommendation
Song for a Whale by Lynne Kelly
From fixing the class computer to repairing old radios, twelve-year-old Iris is a tech genius. But she's the only deaf person in her school, so people often treat her like she's not very smart. If you've ever felt like no one was listening to you, then you know how hard that can be.
When she learns about Blue 55, a real whale who is unable to speak to other whales, Iris understands how he must feel. Then she has an idea: she should invent a way to "sing" to him! But he's three thousand miles away. How will she play her song for him?
Nurse's Notes
FEBRUARY IS DENTAL HEALTH MONTH!
Dental care is an integral part a child’s health. To protect your child’s teeth and encourage good oral health, the American Dental Association recommends parents provide children with a balanced diet, limit snacks, brush twice daily and have regular dental checkups every 6 months. Good dental health is important for proper chewing, speaking and appearance.
If you need help with dental care or need dental supplies please contact the school nurse.
***Immunizations for all 7th grade students***
Spring Break would be a good time to get these mandatory vaccines!
Vaccination Reminder: All 7th grade students are required to have a Tdap vaccine and a meningococcal (meningitis) vaccine BEFORE they begin 8th grade. It is not too early to get this vaccine right now. The health department is available to give this vaccine between 8 AM and 4:30 PM Monday through Friday or your physician can give this vaccine. Written proof of this vaccine must be given to the school nurse. Your student will not be permitted to begin school next fall if they have not received this vaccine. If a student is attending summer school, they must receive these two vaccines before summer school begins. Please email, fax, scan, or mail written proof from your pediatrician or clinic to the school. The address, phone number, and online link to the health department is provided for your convenience. A student can be given these vaccinations anytime after they turn 10 years old.
