"Start With Hello" Activities

Scottsburg Middle School will be participating in Start with Hello week. Start with Hello is part of The Sandy Hook Promise, which is a national nonprofit organization led by several family members who lost loved ones at the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting on December 14, 2012. The sole purpose of Sandy Hook Promise is to prevent gun violence and to increase students feeling connected to others at their school. For more information on Sandy Hook Promise, please visit: www.sandyhookpromise.org.

Art Club, Student Council, SADD, and our guidance department are working together to provide different activities to raise awareness each day:

Monday is Meet and Greet Day. Club members and guidance will be at the entrances to welcome students to the building.

Tuesday is Upstander Day. Upstander notes will be available at arrival and at lunch for students to complete. We'll use them to create an upstander wall of fame.

Wednesday is Wear Green Day. We encourage everyone to wear something green today.

Thursday is Celebrate Trusted Adult Day. Compliment cards will be available at arrival and at lunch for students to recognize a trusted adult.

Friday is Move Forward Day. We will remind students to use the concepts from this week as we move forward through the school year.

Fall Sports Season

Our fall sports season has three weeks of competition remaining.

Eventlink is the platform that we use to communicate with parents/family members regarding practices and events.

If you have questions about athletics, please contact Mrs. Manns at 812-752-8926 option 2.

Winter Sports Season

Winter sports tryouts will be right after fall break. If your student needs a physical, this will need to be on file in the office or in final forms. All students must have a final forms account completed by a guardian before tryouts. If your student participated in a fall sport, you will just need to make sure they have signed up for all of the correct teams that they may want to try out for.

Reminders for Walkers

SMS students who walk to and from school:

Please be careful when crossing the streets, utilize sidewalks and crosswalks when available, and follow the street crossing signs.

Also, be sure that you are a positive representative of SMS when you are in the community.

Also, as Officer Nicholson reminded you during his classroom visits, be sure that you are aware of your surroundings, including traffic, at all times.

Student Handbook Update

The Scottsburg MS student handbook contains some significant updates for the 2022-2023 school year. The most significant changes took place in the discipline section.

Here are the highlights of three changes that will impact the largest number of students:

  • Cell phones are still not allowed to be used during the school day here at SMS. Phones are expected to be turned off and stored in lockers. Students who are carrying a cell phone or using a cell phone during the school day are in violation. The consequences for each situation are outlined in the handbook.

  • Second is illegal substances. This year students who have illegal substances and/or paraphernalia (most common examples are vapes, cigarettes, or alcohol) will be recommended for expulsion on the first offense.

  • In an attempt to be more aligned with the high school discipline policy, we will be following a progressive discipline approach. This means that when a student commits the same offense multiple times, the discipline will get progressively more serious. Each example is outlined in the doc that is provided by clicking on the picture above or via the link below.

We encourage you to read the handbook with your child(ren) and to contact us with any questions you may have.

We are looking forward to working with our students and their parents throughout the upcoming school year.
