Community Check-In
North Rockland Central School District - November 10
Hello North Rockland Families:
Although short, this week was quite an important one in North Rockland.
With Election day and Veterans Day falling in the same week, the last four days provided a unique opportunity to explore important lessons on patriotism, civics, democracy and history.
We’ve found that we can make our curriculum’s impact so much stronger when it’s implemented through experiences.
Utilizing that methodology, elementary schoolers had a blast holding special class elections, where they nominated, campaigned and voted on their favorite celebrities and pop stars to familiarize themselves with the concept. While middle and high schoolers monitored election results, studied trends, then discussed civic education - a broader concept - conveying knowledge of the US political system, context, the value of democracy, the equal rights of men/women and the importance of peace and national reconciliation.
NHL legend Stephane Matteau also returned to NR this week to continue his "Make it Happen!" workshops with our upper elementary students. We are so grateful to be able to provide our learners with the opportunity to experience a confidence building SEL workshop that relates them with someone who conquered childhood anxiety struggles in the most epic of ways.
Finally the District was proud to hold our special Veterans Day ceremonies, events and lessons across every school building. I want to commend and thank our local vets, especially all who took the time to visit our classrooms to teach powerful lessons on service and community to NR learners.
Let us pause this Veterans Day, for just a moment, to give thanks for the dedicated men and women who put their lives at risk so that we might continue to enjoy ours.
If you know a vet, show your gratitude for their service this weekend.

Superintendent of Schools
NRCSD Referendum
Have you heard? On December 4, North Rockland residents will be asked to vote on a referendum which would allow the District to access $17 million from its existing Capital Reserve Fund to renovate softball and baseball fields; add a field hockey/soccer field and parking area; make HVAC upgrades; and, perform classroom, library and main/annex cafeteria renovations at North Rockland High School–at no additional cost to taxpayers.
These construction projects will generate revenue in the form of building aid at approximately 80% of approved project costs.
Detailed information is posted here.
