Principal's message - week 9
Greetings North Plains Families!
Thank you Tiffany Stampflee and all the parent volunteers for working with PE teacher Mr. Binkard on Fund Run day! The kids did a fabulous job even in the not so great weather:( see some pics below!
OK, I've got a serious question for you. What are your feelings and beliefs about math? Do you think you are good at math? Bad at math? As a former math teacher, somthing I often heard at conferences was, "yea, I was bad at math too." Or, "his dad (or older brother) has to help him because I was always bad at math." Believe it or not, EVERYONE is a mathematician and has the ability to be strong in math! There are a couple of great books that may change some of your perceptions around math, one being "Mathematical Mindsets" which talks about how making mistakes and explaining our processes actually helps our brain grow stronger! And another, called "Table Talk Math" gives parents ways to bring mathematical concepts into every day conversations. It is this second book, "Table Talk Math" that I will be using to formulate two math nights this year for parents and students to work together and have fun with math! The dates aren't firm yet, but I'm thinking one in January and one in March, with perhaps a third if people really like it. In the meantime, check out one or both of those books, and please help build your kids confidence in math!
Along the lines of mathematical thinking, we are really hoping to expand our STE(A)M after school programs this year. Currently we have Science Matters, Mad Science, and Code to the Future, Garden Club, Band and Choir, but it would be great to add Lego Robotics, Destination Imagination, or even some drama programs to our list. If you are interested and available to run an after school club, please contact Shannon Schwartz, our STE(A)M coordinator, at mailto:schwarts@hsd.k12.or.us to get more info.
If your child missed picture day, or you as a volunteer did, our re-take day is scheduled for Nov. 2 so get that on the calendar now!
North Plains Hawks tee-shirts are on sale now! Please look for a flier that came home with your child on Thursday to order fun tee shirts. $2.00 from every order goes back to the PTO and there are multiple styles to choose from. Orders are due back to the school by Oct. 11, but if you want to order online feel free to do so. Extra order forms are in the office.
If you haven't had a chance to check out our website lately, please do! I finally have it updated:) The calendar I'm still working on, but a lot is there and more to come! I've also started a twitter account which has a feed running on the website. Pretty cool!
Have an awesome weekend!
Becky
