Agriculture:

Livestock Production

This class is designed to enhance knowledge and skills pertaining to the production and marketing of domestic livestock.


This class provides an opportunity to work with live animals while learning skills relating to animal systems, anatomy, nutrition, reproduction, genetics, pests and diseases, and business operation. Students are also given the opportunity to develop leadership skills through the FFA Organization.


It should be noted that this is a one semester course that grants 1 full credit.

Livestock Production

Small Animal Management

This course is designed to develop knowledge and skills relating to selection, ownership, nutrition, reproduction, health, and management of a variety of small animals. This is a laboratory-based class that gives students hands-on experience with a variety of creatures (Class pets include a guinea pig, hamster, rabbit, and a corgi!).


This extremely popular course covers a wide-variety of household pets including:


Dogs, Cats, Rabbits, Mice, Rats, Chinchillas, Guinea Pigs, Sugar Gliders, Hamsters, Gerbils, Reptiles, Amphibians, Birds, and Fish


It is highly suggested that students interested in the Veterinary Medical Applications courses take this course first. Students are also given the opportunity to develop leadership skills through the FFA Organization.

Small Animal Management

Wildlife and Fisheries Management

This course is designed to examine the importance of wildlife and outdoor recreation while studying natural resources. Included in the course are sections covering boater education, angler education, and hunter education.


This course provides instruction and training necessary for the Texas Hunter Education Certification.


Students are also given the opportunity to develop leadership skills through the FFA Organization.


It should be noted that this is a one semester course that grants 1 full credit.

Wildlife and Fisheries Management

Principles of Ag, Food, and Natural Resources

This comprehensive course prepares students for careers in agriculture, food, and natural resource management. Students will explore animals, plants, food, agribusiness, environmental sciences, and woodshop.

Professional Communications

In Professional Communications, students will learn various life skills such as creating a resume and cover letter, interviewing for a job, and public speaking/debate. This is a one semester course which will satisfy the speech credit needed to graduate high school.

Debate

In Debate, students will study argumentation and competitive debate strategies. They will learn various styles of debate and competitive speaking. Students who take debate will also have the opportunity to sign up for and compete in competitive debate tournaments around the state and nation throughout the year and have opportunities to qualify to state and national level tournaments. This is a yearlong course which will satisfy the speech credit needed to graduate high school and will earn students elective credit as well. Students who take a liking to debate also have the option to continue debate through high school by taking Debate 2, 3, and 4 in subsequent years.

Oral Interpretation

In Oral Interpretation, students will study various styles of competitive acting and speaking through in-depth work on vocalization, characterization, pantomime, and blocking. Students will learn to adapt their acting and speaking to match the style of events such as humor, drama, prose, poetry, duo, and persuasive/informative speaking. Students who take Oral Interpretation 1 will also have the opportunity to sign up for and compete in competitive speech/acting tournaments around the state and nation throughout the year and have opportunities to qualify to state and national level tournaments. This is a yearlong class which will satisfy the speech credit needed to graduate high school and will earn students elective credit as well. Students who take a liking to Oral Interp also have the option to continue the class throughout high school by taking Oral Interp 2, 3, and 4 in subsequent years.

Health

In Health, students develop skills that will help them become health-literate adults. Students gain a deeper understanding of the knowledge and behaviors they use to safeguard their health, particularly pertaining to health risks. Students are taught how to access accurate information they can use to promote health for themselves and others in areas such as fitness, nutrition, mental/emotional health, substance abuse, and interpersonal relationships including human sexuality. Students use problem-solving, research, goal-setting, and communication skills to protect their own health and that of the community.


Successful completion of this course will satisfy the Health requirement for graduation.

Art 1 2D Drawing

This course introduces students to the elements and principles of art through a two-dimensional lens while learning a variety of media, concepts and techniques. This course introduces students to the elements and principles of art through a three-dimensional lens learning additive and subtractive sculpture, ceramics, and digital work. Dance:

Dance 1

This course will focus on dance within a variety of dance genres at an introductory level. Students will acquire vocabulary and skills in ballet, jazz, modern, tap, hip hop, and other genres. Dance history, choreography and performance skills will be introduced. The class is participatory in nature, utilizing movement as a form of creative expression. Specific attire will be required. Attendance at after school rehearsals and performances may be required.


It should be noted that this course can be taken for a fine arts or a physical education credit.

Drill Prep (Drill Fundamentals)

Drill Team Prep is designed to help students prepare mentally and physically to try out for JV and Varsity drill teams. The class covers proper stretching, splits, kick technique, jazz technique, pom, as well as several different genres of dance. It also helps to develop coordination, body form, flexibility, rhythm and balance. This is a non-competitive course and is open to all who desire to enroll. Specific attire, including shoes, will be required.


Successful completion of both semesters will satisfy the PE credit required for graduation.

Music Education:

Band 1

This course provides an opportunity for students to continue instrumental development at an intermediate level. This band will perform as a part of the total band program at all designated football games, pep assemblies, parades, marching contests, concerts, and festivals. Time will be required outside of class for rehearsals, trips, and other engagements. Attendance at all outside of school rehearsals and performances is required. This is a full year course. Additional supply fees may be associated with this course; however, Plano ISD will take steps to ensure that costs will not prevent access.



It should be noted that an audition is required for this course.

Jazz Band

This course is for those students interested pursuing the study and performance of jazz/popular music. Students will perform in a variety of formal and informal settings and may participate in festivals and competitions. This course must be taken in conjunction with Band 1 except when instrumentation needs cannot be met with students within the band program. Additional supply fees may be associated with this course; however, Plano ISD will take steps to ensure that costs will not prevent access.

Choir

This course is for male and/or female students with beginning or intermediate skills in sight-reading and choral singing. Instruction in this course will continue to develop vocal skills for ensemble singing. Students will perform in concert programs and participate in competitive events. Orchestra

The Orchestra program at Vines High School offers opportunities for students of all experience levels to receive instruction on the Violin, Viola, Cello, and Bass. We have 3 ensembles: Chamber, Philharmonic, and Sinfonia and students perform throughout the year at evening concerts and school or community events. For the 2021-22 school year, we are planning an overnight trip to San Antonio that will include a concert at the State Capitol. The Vines Orchestra is a fun way to make friends, connect to our school and we look forward to having you be a part of the orchestra family!

Theatre Arts

The Theatre Arts 1 course is an introductory study in the high school theatre arts program. Basic acting techniques, technical theatre, literature, terminology, history, voice & diction and the fundamentals of play production are introduced. Students will experience the production process throughout performance, directing and criticism. Students will be required to read plays and see live theatrical productions.

Theatre: Production

Students enrolled in the Theatre Production courses will deepen their theatrical study with enhanced experiences and will explore the relevance of theatre-related activities in everyday life. An emphasis will be placed on strengthening the individual's self-concept through the study of various acting techniques, technical theatre, play production, voice & diction, acting, performance, movement, history and literature. Students are required to participate in all productions on their campus either as a performer or technician. A research paper/portfolio will be required and students will be required to read plays and see local live theatrical productions.

Theatre Tech

Students in technical theatre will study the fundamentals of stage design, set and property construction, as well as principles of sound and stage lighting. Theatrical production is an integral part of this class and will require students to participate in the overall construction of campus shows. Each student will be required to attend some play rehearsals and may serve on production crews outside of class. Students will be required to read plays and see live theatrical productions.

Intro to Engineering Design (PLTW)

This is the foundation course in a series of PLTW* pre-engineering courses designed to introduce students to the field of engineering in preparation for a career. The major focus is learning how to take an idea through the design process that will eventually be manufactured or produced. Students will use state of the art 3D design software to help design solutions to different design projects. Working in teams, students will learn about documenting solutions, solving problems, and communicating solutions to other students and members of the professional engineering community.


This course provides instruction and training necessary for the AutoDesk Inventor Certified User Certification.

Dollars and Sense

Want to take a class that is going to help you attain your dreams? This is it. Learn all about finances, banking, credit cards, taxes, insurance and much much more! We cover buying your first car, your first apartment and saving for college! We discuss your future career goals and help you head in the right direction. We also cover the basics, like cooking, shopping, and laundry. This is a fantastic class for anyone needing that push into their future!

Principles of Business, Marketing, and Finance

This course will provide the opportunity for students to gain knowledge and skills in economics and private enterprise systems, global business, marketing of goods and services, advertising, and product pricing. Students will analyze the sales process and financial management principles.


This is a fantastic beginning class into the business world and for any student wanting to understand business basics, this is a must take! This class also works extremely well paired with Virtual Business, as that class allows the student to apply the principles they have learned in this class towards building a business of their own.


It should be noted that this is a one semester course that grants 1 full credit.

Virtual Business

This course will give students an opportunity to incorporate a broad base of knowledge that includes legal, managerial, marketing, financial, and ethical dimensions to create a successful virtual business. Students will be involved in a team project that will give them real-world experience that develops leadership, communication, and management skills through the process of starting a virtual business.

Touch Systems Data Entry

This is a one-semester course designed for all students to acquire basic keyboarding skills and develop speed and accuracy. Students will also be able to format tables, create personal and professional business letters and memos, and produce proper MLA reports. Students will also develop critical file management and organization techniques.

Business Information Management

This course is a full-year course that gives students a working knowledge of technology that prepares them to be proficient in business applications using Microsoft Office. Students will develop word processing (Microsoft Word), spreadsheet (Excel), presentation (Powerpoint), and database (Access) skills.


It should be noted that this course is recommended to well-motivated students that enjoy self-teaching with teacher guidance, as most of the class is taught using a program that is quick-paced and requires focus and attention. It is recommended that the student take Principles of Business, Marketing, and Finance before committing to this course.


This course provides instruction and training necessary for the globally recognized MOS (Microsoft Office Specialist Certifications) exam.

Video Game Design

This one-semester course will allow students to explore one of the largest industries in the field of technology. Students will learn gaming, computerized gaming, evolution of gaming, artistic aspects of perspective, design, and animation, and technical concepts of collision theory and programming logic. Students will participate in a simulation of real video game design with developing technical proficiency in constructing an original 2D game design.


It should be noted that this is a one semester course that grants 1 full credit.

AP Computer Science Principles

AP Computer Science Principles is an introduction to the complete field of computer science. Studies include exploring the technology's impact on society, analyzing and visualizing trends in data, and developing computational artifacts related to their interests. Students will broaden their understanding of computer science for use in a diversity of interests, majors and careers. Programming is only one component of this course and taught at an introductory level using Java Script. No previous coding or programming experience is required. This course prepares students to take the Advanced Placement (AP) Computer Science Principles exam to possibly earn college credit.

Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC):

ROTC 1

The focus of all instruction is on the enhancement of responsible citizenship and leadership. Thought rh Corps of Cadets, students learn to take and respond to orders, prepare for higher positions of responsibility, develop self-discipline, pride, bearing, self-control, and teamwork. Classroom subjects include a study of citizenship values using the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, American Military History; First Aid; and various physical training activities. Students may participate in extracurricular activities such as academic team, leadership team, color guard, marksmanship team, drill team, honor guard, and physical fitness exam. Several extracurricular competitions and other activities involving all members of the Corps of Cadets are conducted throughout the school year.

Cheer

This course is designed for students selected to perform on Freshman, Sophomore, Junior Varsity, or Varsity Cheerleading Squads. This class meets during the school day and consists of conditioning activities, skill development in several cheerleading techniques, and specific preparation for game and competition performances. Students gain membership through a try-out procedure held during the spring of the previous school year.

Vikettes Drill Team

Drill team is a precision performing group that provides students an opportunity to perform at a variety of venues. Performance may include athletic events, competitions, community events, and stage shows. Drill team membership requires weekly after-hours practice and rehearsals. The AVID course is designed to prepare students for success in postsecondary education. This is the beginning-level course which, when combined with AVID 2, 3, and 4, will provide support and skill development in areas specifically aligned with success in rigorous courses in the foundation content areas and in preparing students for success in college.


A recommendation, application, and interview will be required. Students must be accepted into the AVID program. Successful completion of this course will satisfy the speech requirement for graduation.

Peer Assistance and Leadership

This course provides selected students an opportunity to work in a helping role with students on their own campus and/or with students from feeder middle schools and elementary schools, in order to facilitate a more positive school experience and more informed and responsible decision-making. PAL students will receive training in areas such as communication and listening skills, tutoring, group dynamics and other means of helping younger students deal with issues of concern to them. Students can only earn one credit in four years.

Plano FFA

Are you a crazy animal lover? Love flowers or keeping plants alive? Do you envision yourself as a veterinarian, a welder, a floral designer, or biologist? Well FFA is definitely the place for you!


FFA is a leadership group where you have the opportunity to participate in a ton of activities! -


-You can raise livestock, including cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, chickens, and rabbits.

-You can participate in our fall LDE contests, where you will learn valuable life skills, like studying, public speaking, speech preparing, interviewing, etc.

-You can participate in our amazing spring teams, where we travel the state competing at horse judging, livestock judging, meats judging, wildlife, vet tech skills, and more!

-We host monthly meetings that include dinner, a volunteer opportunity, group projects, and fun!


There really is so much to be involved in that everyone will find something in FFA. Plus you get the cool knowledge that you are a member of the largest youth organization in the world!

FFA is a dynamic youth organization that changes lives and prepares members for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education.

FFA develops members’ potential and helps them discover their talent through hands-on experiences, which give members the tools to achieve real-world success.

Members are future chemists, veterinarians, government officials, entrepreneurs, bankers, international business leaders, teachers and premier professionals in many career fields.

FFA is an intracurricular student organization for those interested in agriculture and leadership.

Drill Team

The Vikettes are the representative drill team for Vines High School in Plano, Texas. The Vikettes Drill Team is composed of Freshman and Sophomore girls from Vines High School. Vines High School is located in Plano, TX. The Vines Vikettes perform at home football games for the Vines Vikings Sophomore football team.

The team also performs at the Plano/Clark/Vines cluster game, Vines pep rallies, the Plano Senior High Homecoming Parade, the City of Plano Christmas Parade, several Vines basketball games, different events around Plano, and at their own annual Spring Show.

The Vines Vikettes are supported by the VHS Kick-It Booster Club and are under the direction of Ms. Nicole Dillon.

Choir

The Vines Choir Department enjoys a rich tradition of excellence, pride, and high musical standards. We have a blast singing every day and sharing the joy of music together!


Vines Choirs are consistent Sweepstakes winners at UIL contest and have received Outstanding and Best In Class on our San Antonio trip competitions. Students rate high individually in Region Choir and Solo/Ensemble. Our choir members are involved in many areas at Vines – athletics, drill team, numerous AP classes, theatre, debate, Foreign Language, etc. You can do it all! By striving to maintain our standard of excellence, the Vines choir students continue to make our program a success while being a vital part of the choir!


Music is proven to make you smarter, teaches discipline, relieves stress, gives a sense of achievement, provides positive peer groups, and is fun!! We sing a variety of music – from songs you hear on the radio to standard choral classics. We sing five concerts during the year and there are opportunities to audition for solos and small group performances. Auditions are held for placement. The Vines Choir pop group, Soundsations, meets outside the school day. No matter what your choral experience is, there is a place for you!

NHS (National Honor Society)

The National Honor Society at Vines High School is an active group that serves our school and our community. We focus on scholarship, service, leadership, and character throughout the year and help students prepare for life beyond high school. We will have a meeting in the fall to discuss membership qualifications and provide information about the program. Students interested in joining NHS at a Senior High must be a part of NHS as a 10th grader.
