Facts about Black Caimans

  • Weight: They can weigh between 220 pounds to 1,102 pounds
  • Length: They will grow 5 to 6 meters in length
  • Diet: They eat fish, invertebrates, turtles, birds, capybaras, and sometimes larger animals like deer and livestock

Black Caimans Natural Environment

Black Caimans live in the Amazon Rainforest in South America. They live near slow moving streams and rivers located in the Amazon. Black Caimans are found in the countries of Bolivia, Brazil, Columbia, French Guiana, Guyana, Peru, and Venezuela.

Fun Facts

  • Females lay between 40 and 65 eggs in large nests on the ground
  • Caiman females guard their nests until the babies are born then stay with them until they know how to swim, hunt, and can defend themselves
  • They are the largest species in the family Alligatoridae
  • Their life span is 30 to 40 years
  • Besides humans, jaguars are the Caimans only natural enemies when they are juveniles but when they are adults they have no natural enemies
