Back to School!!!

August is back to school time! That means adjusting back to earlier bedtimes, homework, physicals and germs! If there is one thing that kids like to share, it is germs. But, there are things that you can do to prevent your child or you from getting sick.

1. Make sure you and your children wash hands a lot. Not just when going to the bathroom, but also after touching doorknobs, sneezing, couching. It's always a good idea to carry around a good hand sanitizer in case soap and water aren't an option. Dr. Patty uses Young Living's Thieves Hand Sanitizer because it has no harmful chemicals and a non-drying effect on skin.

2. Start taking a multi-vitamin. While it is best to get the majority of vitamins and minerals from our food, life happens and taking a daily vitamin will help give you the bare minimum of vitamins your body needs. Dr. Patty uses Perque's Life Guard Minis and Life Guard Chewables.

3. Get back to a good sleep schedule. Start bedtime a little earlier each night to make up from the late summer nights. If your child has trouble falling asleep you can read them a story, rub their head, find a child appropriate meditation to go through or diffuse calming essential oils. Young Living has a few that would be Dr. Patty's go to: Peace and Calming, Gentle Baby, Seedlings Calm, or even Lavender.

4. Think about gut health. The largest part of our immune system is in our gut. If we don't have enough pre and probiotics, we can have gut problems as well as be more susceptible to colds and other illness. Prebiotics help feed probiotics and keep them working longer. It is good to use a blend of different probiotics and have the total amount of them be in the billions. Dr. Patty recommends a few different companies probiotics including Designs for Health's Probiophage and Perque's Digesta Guard.

5. Get your family adjusted, including kids. Besides adjustments helping to decrease pain, getting regular adjustment will also help your immune system work better.

6. Finally, if you or your child have a fever, stay home from school or work.

If you have questions or want information on any of the products that Dr. Patty uses, please let us know.

Recipe of the Month: Pectin Free Strawberry Jam

This time of year fruits are at their peak. One way to keep them in your house longer is by making homemade jam where you can control what goes in. Dr. Patty's Mom found this recipe at https://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/strawberry-jam-395041 and has been making it for at least a year.

    • 1 pound fresh (or frozen, thawed) hulled, quartered strawberries
    • 2/3 cup sugar (or sugar substitute)
    • 1 large Granny Smith apple, peeled, coarsely grated
    • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice

1. Combine 1 pound fresh (or frozen, thawed) hulled, quartered strawberries and 2/3 cup sugar in a large heavy skillet. Stir in 1 peeled, coarsely grated large Granny Smith apple. Cook over medium-low heat, stirring and breaking up strawberries, until sugar dissolves. Simmer until jam is thickened, 10-15 minutes. Stir in 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice. Transfer to a bowl or jar; let cool. Cover and chill until set, about 2 hours. Keep chilled; serve within 2 weeks.
