Salk Seahawk Scoop
Week of 1/15/2023
A Note From the Principal
Salk Elementary Families:
As you know, all Fraser Public Schools will be closed on Monday, January 16th, in observance of MLK Day. While this is one specific date chosen each year to honor his legacy and share his message, teaching our students about kindness, equality, compassion, and justice are a part of what we do each day.
This week and throughout February as we celebrate Black History Month, we will be teaching our Seahawks about African-American heroes of the past as they learn about slavery, the Civil Rights Movement, and other areas of American history. They will also learn about today's African-American heroes who are contributing to our American culture in so many positive ways.
In studying the past and discussing the present, students develop empathy and understanding to create a more unified, equal future for all Americans. MLK's message is as important today as it was 60 years ago.
If you would like some additional activities to do with your children, here is a downloadable activity book with coloring pages, mazes, and other age-appropriate activities to support students as they learn about the Civil Rights Movement, MLK, and various other heroes of that time.
Go Seahawks,
Anthony Birkmeier
6th Grade Parent's Night at RMS
Richards Middle School would like to invite you and your child to Richards Middle School on the evening of Thursday, February 23rd, at 6:00 p.m.
The purpose of this evening is to introduce you and your child to their future school, the programs offered, and the selective classes available to them. They will also provide our students with a tour of the building’s selective classrooms.
The program will start promptly at 6:00 p.m. Parents are to report to the RMS gym, where they will meet the administrators, counselors, and academic department heads. Students will gather in the cafeteria, where their tour will begin.
The goal is to provide you and your child with a good understanding of the middle school vision and mission at Richards Middle School.
RMS counselors will visit each elementary classroom beginning Monday, February 27th for the 2023-24 school year and Wednesday, March 1st to assist students in filling out their schedule forms. Students are to return their schedule requests to their 6th-grade teacher no later than March 5th.
Counselors will again help with inputting the course requests at the elementary schools beginning March 6th and March 8th.

Our first full elementary band concert is scheduled for Wednesday, January 25th at 7:00 P.M in the Fraser High School gym. Students must be in the gym with their equipment set up by 6:30 P.M. for a group warm-up before the concert.
For attire, please have your students wear a white top, black bottoms, and black shoes. Prior to the concert, please make sure your student has everything they need: instrument, book, stand, new reeds, etc. so that rehearsals can go smoothly.
Reach out to our elementary band teacher, Ms. DeSchutter, with any questions.

Student Drop Off Reminders
Safety is a top priority at Salk and we can all use these important reminders from time to time.
Parents dropping their children off every morning may utilize the drop off loop at our main entrance. Please do not park in the loop. If you need to park in order to help your child into school, please find a spot in the parking lot.
PLEASE DO NOT DROP OFF IN THE BUS LOOP. This area is designated for buses and can be a dangerous place to drop off your student.
Please refrain from parking anywhere other than designated parking spaces, this includes, parking in handicapped parking spots unless your handicap parking pass is properly displayed.
We continue to have a good relationship with our neighbors at St. Ronald’s Church. They graciously allow us to use their parking lot. Please use designated parking spots there as well and refrain from parking in the main driving lane leading behind the church.
Thank you for your support in keeping our Seahawks safe in our parking lots.

Ready or Not - Cold Weather is Here!
We're starting to see MANY students bundled up each day, which is great! Please be sure to send your child to school dressed for the weather each day. Students will start needing warm coats, gloves, hats, scarves, and/or boots daily throughout the winter.
Please take time to label each and every item- because our lost and found gets bombarded with lost winter accessories throughout the season.
Please note that, per Board Policy, we will be having outdoor morning lineup and heading outdoors for our 20 minute recess(es) if the windchill is 10 degrees or warmer.
Time outdoors is time well spent for kids, in all seasons.
