Have a general question?
Questions about COVID
We want you to know that here at Hillside we are as vigilant as we can be about masking, distancing as much as possible, and washing hands; this is our best defense against the spread of COVID-19.
We would also like you to know that, if there is a confirmed case of COVID-19 at Hillside (staff or student), you will be notified, as appropriate. If your student was in close proximity to that person, especially if unmasked (i.e., during lunch), you will hear from us. We have taken steps here to best support contact tracing, such as compartmentalizing grade levels as much as possible and tracking student movement in the building. We also want to recognize that students and their families have a right to privacy and folks in our community have a right to know about events that potentially impact them.
It's important to be aware that students who are in a household in which someone tests positive for COVID-19 are required to quarantine at home for 10 days or 14 days (depending upon the circumstances). We rely on our district COVID committee to guide families who are impacted in same way by this illness.
Sometimes rumors get started because of actions families are taking to keep our community as safe as possible. It is my desire to keep rumors to a minimum and good information flowing as best I can. Please let me know if you have questions or concerns about anything you might be hearing that is of concern; if we don't know, we cannot help!

Parents and Guardians: We need your help!
Please take a moment to read Hillside's Title I Compact, which is an agreement among our parents/guardians, teachers, and students to support learning and growth in all our students. We rely on our community to give us feedback regarding any changes or additions to this document in order to make it effective and meaningful. There is a feedback sheet below the compact link for you to send in your feedback regarding this document. Soon, we will ask for your electronic signature to approve this document for the 2020-21 school year; watch our newsletter later this month!
Thank you for assisting us in making sure our compact is clear.

Gratitude for Hillside's School Community
When I arrived at Hillside in 2015, the area in front of the marquee was full of weeds and only benefited from the occasional trim it received from Westside's grounds crew. There was nothing special growing in that dirt--only weeds, and, truly, there was no garden at all. Enter Lea Blake, the grandmother of two lovely Hillside tigers who were attending our school at that time. Lea decided to clean up the little spot of land in front of the marquee, clear the weeds, and plant some vegetation that would be able to survive Nebraska's cold winters and hot summers without much of a water source.
Our marquee (and our school) has been the better for Lea's continued efforts with our little garden, though her granddaughters have since grown up and now attend Westside High. She continues to tend that garden each season because she cares. Lea's grandchildren have moved on, and she continues to put effort into something she started that benefits the community of which she was such a part. She's still a member of our Hillside family because she has decided that she is.
Kindness is all around us, if you take a moment to look. I am grateful for all the people whose children attend our school and for those who have decided they are a part of our community, regardless. We recognize you, and we embrace your connection to Hillside. We are the better for your presence in our midst.
