Dolphin News

April 2019

Message from Mrs. Thomsen

Last Friday our Dolphins ran their hearts out during the Fun Run! Thanks to our fantastic PTA, we all had such a great time. We have extended our fundraising for one more week! Thank you to all who have supported our school programs such as our Science and Engineering Specialist, Reflections, Art Masters, TeamKids Challenge, and Robotics program! Del Cerro will be having a Used Clothing Drive to raise funds to remodel our Library! Students would like to purchase some new flexible seating in order to create comfy reading nooks and study areas along with new paint and fabric for the windows. Our 5th grade Girl Scout Troop 3379 and the Del Cerro ASB Officers and PAL students will be helping with this fundraiser too. All money raised will be used to update and improve our library space. PTA will be purchasing new library books. The students are working hard to create an inspiring, comfortable, and relaxing library space. Please drop off bags April 8-12.

Big picture

Del Cerro will have new fencing and gates installed on campus. This fencing will strengthen our campus security.

During our February PTA Meeting, I shared the following information:

  • The front of the school will have an attractive wrought iron fence with two self-closing gates. The other areas of the school, including the steps at the rear of the school, will also have additional fencing and gates as well. All gates will be open during arrival and dismissal times.
  • Additionally, the gate next to our lunch table area will be closed in front of the school nearest the parking lot. A concrete path will be poured on the kindergarten side of the existing fence. This is the path our students will use to walk to the lunch tables.
We now expect this work to be completed during Spring Break rather than during the Summer.

Our MPR remodel/update will be completed during Spring Break. The very top portion of the MPR walls will be painted a bright white. We have four more banners to hang as well (shout-out to Mrs. Mansour for her graphic design work for our school!). They are our new Mission and Vision statements, new school chant, and motto.

Del Cerro will add another specialized academic program to our campus. Next school year we will join Trabuco Mesa and Montevideo in housing three Autism classes on site. We are looking forward to welcoming new staff and students to our wonderful school.

Reminders:

  • April 15-19 Spring Break (No School)
  • April 22-26 Sixth Graders go to Science Camp
  • May 8-28 Window opens for CA State Testing grades 3-6

School Tour Slide Deck

I hosted four school tours recently. The tours were meant for incoming kindergarten parents and for those considering school choice. Here is our presentation: School Tour Slide Deck

Principal for a Day!

On March 22, Mr. Hokerson was our Principal for a Day. He visited every room on campus. He works for CISCO and was able to share a little about his career, the need for engineers and employees who can collaborate, problem solve, and innovate. He thinks our robotics program is awesome and enjoyed having students demo and explain how we use Ozobots and VEX to help us learn.

After our morning campus tour and visits, we headed to the district for a luncheon with all of the other Principals for a Day. During the lunch, Mr. Hokerson addressed the room to convey how much he enjoyed his visit and the innovative teaching and learning that is happening at Del Cerro.

Board Member Barbara Schulman Visits Del Cerro

Del Cerro had a wonderful visit today from Barbara Schulman, one of our Board Members. She was so impressed with the learning she observed and positive energy in all classrooms. She even took the time to teach a bit of a lesson on fractions to Mrs.Goodman and Hobb's students!
