A Letter to Kindergarteners from Their Teacher
Hello, Kindergarten Families!
My mind goes back to August when school started. The kids were so excited and nervous for their new adventure and believe it or not despite the number of "first days of school" that I have had, I was nervous too, as I am every year. I would have never in a million years thought the year would have ended like it has. Flash forward to Friday, March 13, 2020. I knew that things were going on around us but certainly not to the extent that they became. The kids knew nothing was going on at all and at 2:45, like every day at that time, they began to get ready to go home. They cleaned their desks, threw away their trash, ran to gather their jackets and backpacks, and packed their belongings. However, unlike other days, I did not tell them to settle down, stop running or to be quiet. Instead I let them all be 5 or 6. I watched them laugh, giggle, tease, and be joyful and all the while a little voice in my head was saying, "What if I never see these kids again like this? What if we can't come back? What if.....", but I brushed those thoughts off as being a silly, old lady. The bell rang and I lined everyone up as always and watched them with a very heavy heart all run to their busses, head to their cars, and go home to you. And now, that is where my regrets begin..... I regret not telling them all to be safe. I regret not telling them all to have a good summer. I regret not thanking them for probably the best year that I have ever had as a teacher. I regret not telling them to do their best in first grade. I regret not telling them to come back and see me sometime. But mostly, I regret not giving them each that last hug. These things have truly weighed very heavy on my heart and I have shed many tears over them.
I began last week thinking about what I could do to kind of make up for this regret. While looking at my pictures on my phone, tucked in between moments of my life; our fall harvest, my boys, my babies, Matthew's wedding, our Christmas.... I began to see the faces of your kids, moments that I captured throughout the year that you did not see. I toyed with what to do with them; print them, copy them, scrapbook them???? I decided to challenge myself to make a video. If you know me, you know that me and technology are not real friends. We simply walk side by side because we have to!! LOL!! So it began.....I worked for several days downloading and acquiring more pictures from a couple of sources. I downloaded music and began to organize what became the video you are receiving today. Please watch it and enjoy it. Don't look for the mistakes as I am sure there are some. Just watch it for what is. Then let your child watch it and finally give them a hug for me and let them know that I truly loved having them in my class this year and let them know my regrets. I look forward to seeing them when school resumes again and I will give them that hug but they will be older and they will have changed. So thanks again for everything and for letting me unload on you today. Guess maybe I needed it more than the kids.
Very Sincerely,
Nancy Dougherty

Richard Brown
"This is our incredible senior Richard Brown . We are so extremely proud of him. He is moving forward to focus on a major in advanced manufacturing and robotics. He then plans to enlist with the US Army to be an officer. He has proven time and time again he is unstoppable when he puts his mind to something. Although he is incredibly tough he is such a sweet, sensitive and caring person. Words can not express how proud and honored we are to call him our son."

Austin Smith
Austin has the biggest heart who loves his family & friends and is fiercely loyal.
One of the fondest memories I will never forget of our Austin is from the summer of 2016. I picked him up at the boys club and the director told me Austin had done some social work with another member. The boy had become a close friend to Austin and had lived a very hard life and needed a place to live for a while. Austin asked his dad and me if this boy could stay with us for a while. We had never done anything like this before, but Austin was very insistent that we do this to help this boy out. This came with some challenges, but is an unforgettable, cherished time we will never forget, and a time I think molded Austin into the giving person he is today. Neil & I love our Austin more than anything is this world, and are so very proud of him."

Tyler Reagan
He has played golf for Southwestern and learned a lot of patience there. He has learned a lot from the teachers that have taught him and we thank them for giving their best to him. He has enjoyed his time in school, but has had a strong drive for working over after school activities.
He has currently been working at Jimmy Johns for two years and has also worked at SW's Care Club for two years. During his off time he enjoys hanging with friends, working on his truck, and photography. After high school he is going to be joining the Airforce and will be a making career there. He hopes to be able to see the world while serving. I am so proud of you Tyler!"

Dolly Parton's Imagination Library
Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library is a free book gifting program that mails high-quality books to children from birth until their 5th birthday regardless of their family’s income. “The single most significant factor influencing a child’s early educational success is an introduction to books and being read to at home prior to beginning school,” states the National Commission on Reading.
Financial Donations made through the Blue River Community Foundation have allowed this wonderful program to be offered in our community! Each month, registered children who live in Southwestern’s school district will receive an age appropriate book in the mail, addressed to them, at no cost to the family. Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library has partnered with the American Printing House for the Blind, Inc. to make many wonderful books in the program available in braille and audio format for children who are blind or visually impaired in order for all children to benefit from these wonderful books.

A Note from the Nurse
New for the 2020 - 2021 school year, ALL students in preschool through 12th grade will be required to have 2 Hepatitis A vaccines. The Hepatitis A vaccination requires 2 shots in order to be considered compliant. These 2 shots must be given no sooner than 6 months apart.
For example, if at student receives the first Hepatitis A vaccination on February 1, 2020 the student cannot get the second vaccination until August 1, 2020 or after. Therefore, it is important that you get this series started as soon as possible.
