Exciting Things are Happening!

It's Time!
This information was given to the students this past week in paper form to take home, and it was posted on the Weatherford Quest Families' Facebook page.
Students are responsible for getting their games to the high school. They may be picked up from the Quest room on Monday, even if I am not on campus. Check in at the office, and someone will help you get into the room.
The high school administrators have asked that we not arrive any earlier than 4:30 on Monday afternoon. This is to allow the high school student drivers, buses, and parents to leave the campus. Once games are set up, families and students will need to leave the building and reenter at 5:30.
We really need all Quest students to attend with a parent or other adult to "run" their games.
The event begins at 5:30 and ends at 7:00.
All proceeds will be donated to support the Parker County Animal Shelter.
All families and community members (everyone) are welcome.
Parking: Visitors will park behind the high school in the parking lot next to the cafeteria across from the tennis courts and the Outback athletic building.
Entry Fees: Everyone playing the games will need to make a donation for a Fun Pass (wristband). You may decide as a family what you would like to donate to purchase a fun pass. You may choose to make a monetary donation or you can donate supplies such as dog/cat food, kitty litter, blankets, towels, or cleaning supplies such as bleach, etc...
Prizes: Students are welcome to bring candy, trinkets, or old toys to give away as prizes.
Remember:
Toys should only be garage sale type toys that your child no longer wants but a younger child might enjoy. I have a limited amount of candy to share with the students who do not bring prizes to give to the Roocation customers.
Thank you so much for all you have done to help make this charity event a success! It has been a lot of fun!

- The games will need to go home after the event. The students will decide among their groups how this will be handled.

Roocation! World's Fair Update
The students have been working hard on their cardboard arcade games. I have had as much fun watching and listening to them build and collaborate as they have had building and collaborating.
During the week of October 31 - November 4, all games will be tested by their classmates. Therefore, the games need to be finished and ready to play on the day your student comes to Quest that week.
Some students have been taking their games home to work on. Their groups have met at one of their homes to work. If your child's group needs some extra time to work on their game, please feel free to take it from the Quest room anytime. It just needs to be returned to school by the following due dates:
Wright 3rd/4th: Monday, October 31
Crockett 5th/6th: Tuesday, November 1
Crockett 3rd/4th: Wednesday, November 2
Curtis 5th/6th: Thursday, November 3
Curtis 3rd/4th: Friday, November 4

Roocation! World's Fair
This year, the WISD Quest Cardboard Challenge Charity event will have a global twist. Each campus has been assigned a different continent. Students will spend a short time studying the countries and cultures. Then they will create a working arcade or fair game based on that theme that will be on display and played at Roocation! World's Fair.
Last year, this event was a huge success. Due to the generous support of our parents, WISD staff, and community, we were able to donate $1,251.68 as well as food, cat litter, and other supplies to the Parker County Animal Shelter. We will once again let the students vote on which non-profit charity organization they want to support.
Please stay tuned for more information coming soon!

Painting will take place during this time. Please have your child bring a "cover-up" or wear clothes that are okay to wear while painting.
This week, the Quest classes will begin the selection process of the non-profit organization they want the proceeds from Roocation! World's Fair to go to. We will know the final selection by October 17.

Let the Building Begin!
After forming teams, the students researched cardboard arcade games, decided on what they were going to make, and collaborated to create a materials list. Some campuses created a digital list in Google Docs. Others created an analog (paper) copy.
Please ask your student what he/she will be making and what materials he/she needs to bring to class this week so the building can begin.

How to Access Students' Google Files From Home
- Go to the Google home page to sign in.
There are 2 options for signing in.
- Either click on "Sign in" or click on the 9 gray squares (officially known as the "apps launcher") on the top right side of the page.
- If clicking on the apps launcher, you will select either Google Drive or Google Docs at this point.
- Click on "Add Account" if the student has never signed in on that computer before or choose his/her account if the student has signed in before.
- If you clicked "Sign in" first, at this time, you find Google Docs or Google Drive and select.
- Students will log in using their Weatherford ISD email address and password. This is typically typed like this: firstname.lastname@weatherfordisd.net Some students have added characters or missing characters to their names. Ask your child about this.
- Next, type in the password. This is a combination of the word roos and the student's lunch number (student ID number). It is all lowercase with no spaces. Example: roos999999
- This will get the student in the account.
If you have any questions or need help signing in, please contact me. I will be happy to help! ccheshire@weatherfordisd.com
Bottle Biology Update
Please keep sending those to school this week so we can get started building the decomposition columns.
Thank you, also, for rinsing them out and removing the labels before sending them to school.
Also, Don't Forget to Return...
Most students have already returned their form.
If you need another one, you may click on the appropriate school and grade level to download and copy another one to fill out and return with your child on his/her Quest day.

Roocation! World's Fair
In class, we will talk about the continent. The students will divide into groups to make a plan for their games and create a materials list. These things will need to be brought to school during the week of September 26 - 30. This is the week the construction will begin.
Again this year, students may work alone, with a partner, or with a group of 3 students. You may want to have some conversations at home about what type of game students could make and if your child wants to work alone or with a partner(s).

Don't Forget to Send...
Bottles for Bottle Biology
We are going to study decomposition in action to learn how nature recycles garbage and to learn why this is essential to the availability of nutrients for living things.
To accomplish this, students are going to need three (3)- 2-liter, empty, clear plastic bottles with the caps. Please help us get started on this fun project quickly by sending empty, clear plastic 2-liter bottles to school as soon as possible. It would be very helpful if you could remove any labels and rinse out the bottles before sending to school.
Thank you so much!!

Let the Games Begin!
Quest begins this week, and I am very excited to see my students!
This newsletter will be updated every 2-3 weeks to let you know what is currently happening. I will send a link to you via Remind, and it will also be uploaded to my campus and professional websites.
On the first day, students will receive information about our class to take home. There will be a contact and technology permission form that you will need to fill out and return to me. The forms are also available online on my campus websites. You may click below on the day your student attends class to access the information specific to that group. These pages are able to be downloaded and printed if you wish. There is also a wealth of information over many other tidbits about our program and gifted learners. Please feel free to browse around the whole site.
This year, I will continue to use Remind to send text message reminders to you on the day before your child's Quest day, usually around 5 or 6 o'clock p.m. These will be short notes that share information about what students need to bring to class the next day. Please join your student's Remind group. I will send home a flyer on the first day of Quest that gives instructions on how to sign up, or you may click on the link above in the previous post to learn how. I have archived all of the groups from last year, so you will need to sign up again to join this year's group.
From time to time, I will tweet about what the students are doing in class. You may follow me on Twitter by going to @cheshirecarla. There is a place on the technology permission form for you to accept or decline your child's picture being posted. I will always honor your choice.
The WISD Quest program has a Facebook group called Weatherford Quest Program Families. To learn how to join, you may go to my campus website (click on the link above in the previous post) or see the image below.
