Incubator- the container that holds and develops the chickens

Embryo- unborn babies

Development- to make progress in, to grow

Optimal- best

Yolk- that yellow goo that comes when you crack an egg

Air Space- the space between the shell of the egg and the egg white that your parents always tell you is healthy

Albumen- the white part of the egg that your parents say is healthy to eat

How does the incubator act like a mother chicken when providing an optimal temperature for the egg?

~The mother chicken sits on her eggs. When she sits on her eggs she keeps her eggs warm at a temperature of 99 degrees Fahrenheit!!! How do the eggs survive?! That's burning hot!

~Well, believe it or not, that is the optimal, I just threw a vocab word in there, temperature for development, oh there's another vocab word.

~Since we don't have a mother chicken in our class we use something called an incubator, if you want to see one just scroll down a little bit to the labeled picture.

~ To make sure all the baby chickens hatch the incubator must pretend to be a mother chicken. The incubator heats up to 99*F and stays in that temperature for 21 days! Could you survive that?

Temperature, what is it? And how does it affect the eggs?

Temperature- how hot or cold something is

~Temperature is very important to to chicken eggs

~If the temperature is too hot the eggs might overheat but if the temperature is too cold the eggs will freeze

~The best temperature for the eggs is 99 degrees Fahrenheit
