Engineering in Action Students in Ms. Early's STEM/Tech classes have been working on developing models and designing solutions to solve problems. Sixth grade students are shown testing their Skimmers. | Wellness & PE Ms. Gallugi's classes are working on problem solving as well. What do you do when you need help? How are different situations similar? Who can you talk to for support? Here, students are working on a template to help them structure a scenario. | It's Cold Outside...and windy too! Is your child missing a layer? The CPS Lost & Found, located in the CPS lobby, has quite a few sweatshirts, coats, hats and other gear. Please have your student take a look to see if any missing articles may be in the Lost & Found. |

Insulated Coolers Grade 7 students have been learning about Thermal Energy in their most recent unit. Students are posed with the question: How to best keep a popsicle from melting? Collaborative groups then worked to design an insulated cooler that they think will be best using a variety of materials. | Teamwork Makes the Dreamwork! Using construction paper, aluminum foil, packing peanuts, foam, boxes, and other materials, students make their cooler plans come to life. | Elephant Toothpaste Mr. Craven's 8th grade classes have been learning about endothermic and exothermic reactions in Science. This is a demonstration using yeast and hydrogen peroxide as a catalyst in a chemical reaction. |

How to Handle Makeup & Missing Work at Cyrus Peirce Middle School
So, how do we go about making up work due to an absence? One way to stay in the loop is to check on classroom Schoology pages. While not a substitute for in person instruction, it is a helpful tool for a student - and their grownups - to see what is being done while they are out. Some assignments can be done easily online, while others may need some support from a teacher or a classmate.
Another important resource is the X-Block at CPS. Teachers are available from 2:20-250 pm each day to provide support and extra help when making up missing assignments. Any child who is absent should definitely be attending X-Block sessions with their core teachers to get caught up. If your child needs a quiet place to work independently, the CPS Library is open each day at 7am and closes at 5pm. Students should be encouraged to take advantage of that space when needed.
Communication is critical, especially when an absence is longer than a day or two. Students and families alike should be reaching out to teachers via email, Remind, phone calls or Schoology messages to check in and see what needs to be completed.
We understand that when children are sick or injured, they may not feel up to doing schoolwork all day long. That is why it is so important for students to check in with their teachers upon return to school to make a plan to ensure success in learning.
