Willy Wonka JR

We've got a big weekend coming up for our CPS community this week! The CPS Drama Club has been working hard to present the musical Willy Wonka Jr for all of us to enjoy. From the dedication of Mrs. Cutts' Drama Club members to set design and scenery in Ms. Wendelken's Art classes, many of our students have taken part in some way to be sure the show will go on! We hope to see you there!

How to Handle Makeup & Missing Work at Cyrus Peirce Middle School

There are a variety of reasons a child may miss school. Holidays, sports dismissals, extended vacations, the run of the mill cold, and COVID related absences have impacted our students' attendance recently. For many of our kids, this is the first time they've experienced missing work at the middle school level. The general rule of thumb at CPS is "double" the time to make up work. For example, if a student is absent for 5 days, they have 10 days to make up the work missed.

So, how do we go about making up work due to an absence? One way to stay in the loop is to check on classroom Schoology pages. While not a substitute for in person instruction, it is a helpful tool for a student - and their grownups - to see what is being done while they are out. Some assignments can be done easily online, while others may need some support from a teacher or a classmate.

Another important resource is the X-Block at CPS. Teachers are available from 2:20-250 pm each day to provide support and extra help when making up missing assignments. Any child who is absent should definitely be attending X-Block sessions with their core teachers to get caught up. If your child needs a quiet place to work independently, the CPS Library is open each day at 7am and closes at 5pm. Students should be encouraged to take advantage of that space when needed.

Communication is critical, especially when an absence is longer than a day or two. Students and families alike should be reaching out to teachers via email, Remind, phone calls or Schoology messages to check in and see what needs to be completed.

We understand that when children are sick or injured, they may not feel up to doing schoolwork all day long. That is why it is so important for students to check in with their teachers upon return to school to make a plan to ensure success in learning.
