The Great Kindness Challenge - January 30-February 3, 2017
What is The Great Kindness Challenge?
The Great Kindness Challenge is one school week devoted to performing as many acts of kindness as possible (using the kindness challenge checklist). The Great Kindness Challenge will take place January 30-February 3, 2017. CCS will join over 5 million students that participated last year. The GKC has the power to increase empathy, tolerance, and compassion for all students from kindergarten through high school.
Jill McManigal, Executive Director of Kids for Peace, stated, “When students perform kind act after kind act after kind act, kindness becomes a habit. When kindness becomes a habit, peace becomes possible.”
Imagine students complimenting each other, reaching out to a lonely child, picking up trash, surprising friends with happy notes in their backpacks, thanking their teachers creatively, and eating lunch with a new group of friends. These kind acts and more will happen in schools across all 50 states during the 6th Annual Great Kindness Challenge! Chateaugay Central School will be having kindness-themed spirit days. Please find the details below.
- Monday: “Tip your hat to kindness” -- students wear a hat
- Tuesday: “Dream of Kindness” -- students wear pajamas
- Wednesday: “Nothing beats team kindness!” -- students wear sports attire
- Thursday: “We love kindness!” --students wear pink or red
- Friday: “Crazy about kindness!” --students wear crazy socks/crazy hair

Door Decorations - 1st Grade
Mrs. Hanley's first grade learned many facts about Martin Luther King, Jr. through stories and discussions. Children learned about diversity in our society and the importance of being respectful to all people. The students also learned about solving problems peacefully. These are concepts that we practice every day in our classroom. We made a craft showing our "lights for peace".

Leadership
"To be successful, organizations must have leaders at all levels. Great leadership doesn't just happen - it must be taught, learned, and practiced."
Section X Northern Athletic Conference is sponsoring a Leadership Program for students in our Section. On Wednesday January 18th, Kyle Tower, Kieran Gibson, Danielle Cook and Jaelyn Martin took part in the program with other area students at Franklin Academy.
Instructor Abrahm DiMarco was the presenter to discuss philosophy on leadership. Students took part in group discuss and team building activities to learn the skill of leadership. All educational institutions have a wide variety of student-lead groups and activities. Mr. DiMarco has trained numerous athletic teams, student groups and businesses. Our students will continue in the program throughout the remainder of the school year and into next.

Emily King and Hannah Cook are eating lunch with Mrs. Swanston's PK students. Throughout the week high school students go down to the elementary wing and help out our young friends. Both students, young and old, enjoy this interaction and another set of hands can be very helpful. Thanks to all our students that take time out of their busy schedules to help out.
