Yes they provide energy it depends how much you eat.

What happens if your body does not have enough (deficiency) of the nutrient?

The carbs are broken down into glucose (sugar) and is put into the bloodstream but when the Pancreas can't make insulin fast enough your body starts to do things wrong.
