Cougar News
Week of 5/14/18 - 5/18/18
Letter from Principal Nelson
Howdy Cougars!
STAAR week is upon us! We will have students testing Monday through Thursday as follows:
Monday: 6th grade and 7th grade Math STAAR; 8th grade STAAR Math retest
Tuesday: 6th grade and 7th grade Reading STAAR; 8th grade Reading retest
Wednesday: 8th grade Science STAAR; 6th and 7th grade makeup day
Thursday: 8th grade Social Studies STAAR; 6th and 7th grade makeup
Friday: all grade levels makeup day
We know our kids will do well next week as we’ve been training for this moment since August. However, for them to do their absolute best, we need some help from you guys as well. Firstly, it’s important you let them know, as we have, that this test isn’t the biggest of deals. It’s merely a piece of data we use when looking at the student as a whole. It’s important we do not add any extra pressure to this 4 hour exam for fear students will not be able to perform at their best. Secondly, and this is a biggie as well, make sure your student gets plenty of sleep the night before and has an exceptional breakfast the day of. Preferably one packed with plenty of protein. Also, have them bring a snack (not too messy or stinky) and have a bottle of water in tow as well. We’ll have goldfish and such here on campus, but if you feel they’ll need something more substantial, please provide. Thirdly, please make sure they have a book, magazine, or similar reading material with them for when they finish. After a student is finished with their test, the only thing they are allowed to do is read; no drawing, working on homework, or using any electronic devices of any kind.
That’s pretty much it: sleep well, eat well, and bring a book. If your student is able to handle these three suggestions, success is sure to follow.
Thanks for reading and for helping us put our student’s mind at ease about these exams. We’re fortunate that on the 18th the entire school gets to celebrate at Carnival after a week of testsso make sure you purchase your wristbands and tickets through our website. If you need more info, send an email to Mrs. Newell (jennifer.newell@austinisd.org) and she will happily oblige.
