Math Update

Week of December 7th

This Week in Math...

This week we are focused on fractions! Pretest results indicated that a review of adding and subtracting unlike denominators is necessary before we dive into mixed numbers. In fifth grade, students are expected to add and subtract fractions and mixed numbers with denominators up to 12. Small groups will be formed based on the pretest results, allowing for differentiated instruction.

In independent work and centers, students will continue to practice prime & composite numbers and simplifying fractions. Students will also work on making test corrections, practicing and taking retests on any SOL in which they have not yet achieved 80%.

Students will take the 5.3 Test on Friday which focuses on prime/composite and odd/even numbers. The study guide will come home on Monday and is due on Thursday. Please take time to review the study guide with your child.

Change The World - Hour of Code 2015

Hour of Code

The world celebrates the Hour of Code this week! The Hour of Code is a global movement by Computer Science Education Week and Code.org reaching tens of millions of students in 180+ countries through a one-hour introduction to computer science and computer programming.

At TES, students will participate in the Hour of Code during their Library resource time this week. Fifth graders will also code in the math classroom by creating an interactive holiday card using Scratch, an easy to use coding program.

Check out Mrs. Downey's digital newsletter for information about how you can incorporate the Hour of Code at home!
