Screen Time Concerns and 5-2-1-0 Healthy Choices
I have been very pleased with some of the help we get from Fayette County Public Health and Gunderson Palmer Health Center as they remind us of the 5-2-1-0 Healthy Choices. These choices are 5 servings of fruits and vegetables per day, 2 hours or less of screen time, 1 hour or more of physical activity and 0 sugary drinks every day.
As we enter into this 3rd quarter where days are short and children spend less and less time out doors, we need to be aware of the screen time all kids have in a daily basis. Not only does screen time become a terribly habitual behavior, but it creates a sedentary, unhealthy activity for too many of us. There has also been plenty of research that finds high amounts of screen time, especially with social media, to cause depression in children of those formative ages.
Do you also know that Radio Frequency Waves of the Electromagnetic Spectrum have been linked to cancers? Those are the same waves that carry your cell phone information, televisions, radios, and all forms of radio communications. More recently there has been concerns for the upcoming 5G networks and how they could interfere with weather satellites because their wavelengths are very close to that of the natural vibrations of water molecules. The theory would be that Weather predictions depend upon the amounts of water in the atmosphere. If 5G signals vary only slightly from their own wavelength it could cause interference in the readings of the water content in the air.
Not only could we get less accurate weather predictions, but with vibrations that close to water molecules' movements, we may need to think about impacts to us. Because we are composed of 55-60% water, and infants can be as high as 78% water, could this impact human health? Of course it would take a massive increase in Electromagnetic Waves for cancers or other impacts to develop, so we won't panic, but its good to be informed.
Leader in Me Habit #4: Think Win Win
Everyone Can Win. Too often we get stuck on wanting what we want and not considering the needs or wants of others. When we get what we want, we get a win, but does that always have to be a loss for someone else? No.
Thinking Win Win takes the courage to give away some power and use consideration for others needs so that colleagues, friends or family members can also take a win. We make deposits in others’ Emotional Bank Accounts when diametrically opposing viewpoints arise and we find third alternatives which can end up in two wins. Some folks hate compromise and therefore they can only see the two directly opposing views to a problem. They cannot see anything but a win and a loss, when actually there may be multiple options to solve a problem.
I think of the concept of splitting that last piece of pie between two children, they both will want the perceived bigger piece when the cutting is done. When that happens, there is no middle ground, there is a big piece and a smaller piece, no compromise is available. I suppose we could just throw the pie out and then nobody is happy, Lose-lose! But what if we ask one child to do the cutting, and then the other gets to take first choice. I've never seen a child care so much about how they cut that pie then when their brother gets first choice of the results! That's going elsewhere in the process to settle the issue or actually avoid having the whole win-lose argument. Win-Win
To put Habit #4 into practice we must consider how we can create win-win agreements, We need to;
– Build your Emotional Bank Account with others.
– Have an Abundance Mentality.
– Balance courage and consideration.
– Consider other people’s wins as well as our own.
