Friday Focus
Week of October 10 - 14
NO SCHOOL FOR STUDENTS OR STAFF ON MONDAY, OCTOBER 10, 2016
One Book One School
Today, October 7th, our librarian revealed the name of our book for our One Book One School project. It is The Great Shelby Holmes by Elizabeth Eulberg.
We encourage families to read the book aloud - reading 5 chapters per week for 6 weeks. Questions and activities will be provided to teachers by Mrs. Robbins each week.
The event will end on November 18th, and we will celebrate with a culminating event afterwards.
If you have questions, please contact Mrs. Robbins at susan.robbins@springbranchisd.com, or 713-251-6227.

Principal's October Update (from October PTA Meeting)
Reading Levels
- At conferences you will receive information about how students transition through the reading levels.
Math Club
- This is in the works - we have a teacher who is interested in getting this started.
- 4th and 5th grades will be working on a plan for Fridays. More information will be coming to you soon.
Grading/Retest Policy Reminders
- Grades should reflect academics, not behavior. (i.e., points should not be taken off for a student not having their name on their paper, etc. )
- Students who score below 70 on a test will retest after the teacher has had an opportunity to reteach the concepts. The child will receive the higher grade.
Classroom Consequences
- We do not do group consequences at MWE.
- If a child is missing recess as a consequence from the teacher, they will walk and/or run, instead of sitting out.
Middle Rooms
- 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th all have a plan for the "middle" rooms in each pod. Parents and teachers are working together closely to design these additional learning spaces.
Updates from our Superintendent
- Our district will need to give even more money back to the State next year under the current Recapture plan.
- The first reorganization of the district resulted in some savings for our district. The district no longer pays for principal coaches, and icoaches were put at the 13 neediest schools in a half day coaching, half day teaching position.
Faculty/Parent book study
- I would like to do a faculty/parent book study starting in January with the book Mindset, by Carol Dweck. More details will be coming later.
MWE Instructional Minutes Make Up Plan - January 2017
Key Information:
· Schools are required to provide 75,600 minutes of instruction annually.
· Meadow Wood Elementary missed a day of instruction due to a damaged water pipe on September 23rd.
· The Texas Education Agency will not provide waivers for the first two days of missed instruction; therefore, schools who miss days are required to make adjustments to their calendars and/or daily instructional minutes to recover the lost instructional time.
Campus Improvement Team
· After reviewing multiple options to get back the lost minutes, the Meadow Wood CIT adopted a plan to add five additional minutes to their instructional day starting on January 4 and continuing for the remainder of the school year. The new schedule will be 7:55-3:00. The additional five minutes in the spring semester is sufficient for the school to meet the minutes requirement.
New Schedule
7:30 – Doors Open
7:50 – Bell rings for students to go to the pod
7:55 – Bell rings - School begins
9:30 – Attendance taken
3:00 – Dismissal
