How to Submit a Superior Response - Mrs. Wolff - S2017
Discussion Post Student Samples - Superior v. Good
Hi everyone,
Before submitting each Discussion Post, be sure to carefully edit your work for:
- Correct/ formal grammar
- Correct / formal syntax (sentence structure)
- Correct / formal punctuation
- Correct / formal vocabulary
- Avoid misuse of homonyms (there / their / they're, etc.)
Also, from now on, when we are discussing and analyzing texts, be sure to use partial quotes - you will have to do this from now on in order to receive full credit.
Q: Why do we have to do this?
A: Using partial quotes in your Discussion Post responses to texts is excellent practice for your upcoming essays. It is a way of making a sentence / paragraph your own, and not someone else's. From a rhetorical (persuasive) standpoint, in speaking as in writing, it is important to learn how to back-up the claims you make with evidence, either from the text you are analyzing in English class, or in the conversation you are having with a friend, adult, etc.
When you use evidence to persuade your point to be true, people are more likely to take note of you, and listen to what you have to say. It is a way of establishing ethos, or credibility, with your peers, teachers, parents, etc.
Check out the following response to our "Predictions" Discussion Post from one of our students - excellent use of syntax (sentence structure), vocabulary, and detail. Agatha Christie would be proud!
The only thing to add in future posts are partial quotes, which can be found in Dorothy Parker's excerpt. Using partial quotes is something we master as a class by Week Four.
See the second image at the bottom of this News Item for examples from last semester's American Lit/Comp class for use of partial quotes to prove our claims with evidence from the text.
Phenomenal writing from a previous American Lit/Comp student, below. This is a "Superior" 10/10 post - remember that all future "Superior" posts must use partial quotes when we are analyzing a specific text:
Additionally, following are a few samples of "Very Good" (7/8 points) and "Superior" (8/8 points) responses to peers from last semester's American Lit/Comp class.
The remaining two points are also added if partial quotes are used in your responses to peers - if also "Superior," this equals 10/10 points, total.
For this Discussion Post, students analyzed a short story by Charlotte Perkins Gillman, entitled, "The Yellow Wallpaper," as well as a poem by e e cummings, in our American Lit/Comp class.
Note the difference between the "Very Good" responses - they are very good, but are lacking in use of partial quotes - and the "Superior" post - it is truly "Superior," because it includes excellent analysis, plus multiple (3+ required) use of partial quotes throughout the post.
If the type is too small, hit "Command and the + sign" together to enlarge your screen if you have a Mac; if you have a PC, and don't know how to zoom or reduce, type in a search on Google for instructions.
I know you can do it!
As your posts become more "Superior," so will every writing assignment you complete from now on!
Happy writing, editing and revising!

Response to Peer:
If you make claims without evidence, they're just claims without evidence. :)
