Mill Creek Magic Messages

News and Updates from Mr. Ortman and Mr. Murtha 1/6/2023

Mill Creek Welcomes Winter!

Winter Break may have passed, but Winter itself is just over two weeks old. While Mill Creek may no longer be celebrating the Holidays, we can still celebrate the winter season and weave some of the that season into our learning! Some examples of this are hallway artwork featuring winter themes and student work incorporating the season. Two examples of the latter happened in 1st Grade where students used hot chocolate (a winter favorite!) as the backdrop for mathematical inequalities and where students created writing pieces about how they would prepare to go outside on a snow day.

If the warm weather we had earlier this week is an indication of the winter for which we are in store, snow and snow days may not be part of the 2023 winter season, but we imagine there are many Creekers who are hopeful for at least a little snow in which to play at some point before spring arrives!

Happy New Year and Happy Winter!

FROM MR. ORTMAN and MR. MURTHA

Happy New Year, Mill Creek!

We know it can be difficult to come off of an extended break, so it was just incredible to see how energized our students and staff were as we returned to school from Winter Break this past week! While our students and staff enjoyed their time off, they seemed excited to share some Winter Break adventures and to interact with peers and colleagues they had not seen in over a week. There were many classroom teachers who commented about what a focused and productive week they had - kudos to you, Creekers!

As we have crossed into 2023, the importance of our Community is a constant. Considering this, the upcoming Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service (Monday, January 16) is an opportunity to support the Mill Creek and greater Community. 5th Grade teacher, Mr. Molenari, is bringing back the MLK Day "Souper Bowl," for which our students and Community have the opportunity to make soup at home or solicit soup donations from local eateries for donation to the local food pantry. Soup donations will be collected at Mill Creek on Monday, January 16 from 2:00-4:00 p.m. We can even provide soup containers if you need them - just have your child see Mr. Molenari, and he can furnish them with some to bring home.

Thank you for an incredible start to 2023 and for considering making a "Souper" donation on January 16!

Have a great weekend!

Instructional Spotlight - Ms. Angelo, 5th Grade

We love to encourage reading here at Mill Creek, and we spend a good deal of time digging into author's purpose, finding book themes, and making literary predictions, among other high-level thinking surrounding literature. However, we also want to preserve and encourage joy in reading, and sometimes the most enjoyable part of reading is simply sharing what you are reading and what you like about what you are reading. This past week, Ms. Angelo's students, who clearly put some time in over the Winter Break making good progress on their personally-selected books, took some time to engage in book discussions where they shared information about their respective books, such as the genre, what they liked/disliked about their book, and why they would/would not recommend their book. Some lively literary conversations occurred, and many of Ms. Angelo's student have some really good book recommendations for their next read!

Student Laptop Expectations

Central Bucks Technology & Innovation Department is asking us to stress the importance of laptop case use for students (grades 3-6) when they transport their laptops and when laptops are not in use for extended periods of time. At school, we will be stressing the importance and reminding students of the need to put their laptop in its case during these times (e.g. when taking a laptop from their classroom to specials class). We ask that you stress these practices at home, too. Thank you for your support!

Additionally, if your child loses or misplaces their laptop case, please reach out to the Mill Creek Main Office.

District Laptop and iPad Care

Central Bucks Innovation and Technology Department has asked us to communicate the following regarding District-issued laptop and iPad care...

  • Please encourage your children to use their laptop/iPad bags for carrying devices in school, at home, and to and from each location.
  • Please encourage your children to report issues/problems with their devices, so they can be properly address and fixed as soon as possible.
  • The laptop/iPad payment fee covers accidental damage. Intentional damage may result in a family being billed for the damage.

Schools will be communicating these messages in school as well.

We appreciate your support!

Inclement Weather Procedures for Car Riders - Dismissal

We ask that, on inclement weather days, car riders post a placard with the student(s) family last name, so we can call in names for quicker dismissal. We will do our best to send a message out earlier in the day if we believe inclement weather dismissal is necessary for car riders. Feel free to use the placard template below if you find it helpful.
