From the TMS Health Office
Parents of 6th Grade Students: Please continue to send in your child’s physical examinations and immunization records. All children entering the 7th grade must show proof of the following immunizations: 3 doses of Hepatitis B, 2 doses of MMR, 2 doses of varicella and 1 dose of Tdap (105 CMR 220 000). The required immunizations are usually given at your child’s physical during 5th or 6th grade.
Flu Season is upon us: Please keep in mind that the flu season is unpredictable. Even during mild seasons, influenza can cause illness and even death for thousands of people in the United States. Symptoms of flu can include fever, cough sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills, fatigue and sometimes vomiting and diarrhea. Some people with flu will not have a fever. Influenza also causes a substantial amount of missed school among students and staff. If your child has the flu, they should stay home to rest and to avoid giving the flu to others. They should be kept home until at least 24 hours after their fever is gone without using fever reducing medications, like acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Motrin or Advil). The Massachusetts Department of Public Health is advising that the single best way to prevent influenza is vaccination of everyone six months and older. The Flu: A Guide for Parents was recently sent home with additional information about the flu and how to protect your child. The flyer is also available at www.mass.gov/flu.
If your child has been diagnosed with a communicable disease (such as flu, strep throat, conjunctivitis, whooping cough, chicken pox etc.) please notify the health office. It is important for us to know what illnesses are present within the school community so that we may take measures to protect the other students from illness.
Screenings: We will start our annual 7th grade screening for height, weight, vision and hearing during the month of December. Our postural screenings continue to be ongoing throughout the year during your child’s PE rotation. If your child is screened by his or her physician, please be sure to have the findings noted on the physical.
REMINDERS:
Illnesses: As per school policy, if your child has been sick, (vomiting, fever over 100, communicable illness such as strep) students need to be fever free without the use of acetaminophen or ibuprofen, no vomiting, and no diarrhea for 24 hours. For illnesses requiring antibiotics such as Strep throat, students need to be on antibiotic therapy AND fever free for at least 24 hours before returning to school. For illnesses such as conjunctivitis (pink eye), once students have been on antibiotic therapy if appropriate, children may return to school. For common viruses/coughs and colds it is not usually appropriate to keep children out of school for the duration of symptoms, however the student’s cough should be manageable and the child should be eating and drinking adequately. Frequent hand washing at home and in school is a must to limit illness transmission!
Please send your child to school with a refillable water bottle daily: Refillable water bottles are strongly encouraged to keep the children hydrated through out the day. In addition to keeping the children properly hydrated, water helps to soothe sore throats and quiets coughs.
Medication Policy: All medications must be kept in the nurse’s office and overseen by the RN to keep all students safe. Students are not permitted to keep medications in their backpacks or lockers with the exception of Epi-pens or inhalers if deemed appropriate by his or her MD. Any medications to be administered by the school nurse must be accompanied by a signed physician’s order and written parental consent. This includes prescription and non-prescription medications.
Please contact the Health Office at 978-649-3115 with any questions or concerns.
