Irony
This is a figure of speech where the actual meaning of the words is different than the intended meaning. You usually use these for a hysterical part in a piece of writing.
"Go ask his name: if he be married. My grave is like to be my wedding bed.Romeo and Juliet
"tis true this god did shake"
"Phone out, give us a call"
"The fire station is on fire"
"The white wine looked anything but white"
Idiom
An idiom is a use of words that the literal meaning of the words is the opposite of what the term is taken as. You use an idiom if you want to have a figure of speech or just to lighten the mood of something.
"Every cloud has its silver lining but it is sometimes difficult to get it to the mint"
"Break your leg"
"a piece of cake"
"give it a shot"
"get your act together"
