September Words for the Wise
Owen Elementary School
Set Sail for Your Incredible Journey! Explore More!
Ahoy Owen Family Members! Happy Labor-Less Day!
As Captain of the Owen Citizenship I want to thank you for trusting us with your child's welfare and education on this year's journey for Port Success. The passengers are full of life, energy, enthusiasm, and curiosity in exploring their new adventures. We are truly grateful you are on board!
We've set high expectations for everyone to exhibit respectful and safe "CHAMPion" behavior in all areas of the ship, cabin, and the ship's tender or dinghies. This includes transportation to and from the ship such as a bus, car, and bicycle. We are practicing all our safety drills to ensure we are ready for any rough sea. Please ask your passenger what are the "CHAMPion" expectations in a particular area of the ship or ask them what does each letter in CHAMPS stand for. Here they are so you can help your passenger continue to be a true Champion on The Owen Citizenship. C: Conversation, H: Help, A: Activity, M: Movement, P: Participation, and S: Success.
Our crew and passengers truly believe in and demonstrate the characteristics of our CHARACTER COUNTS! program and CHAMPS expectations on a daily basis. Last year 97% of our students DID NOT receive a behavioral office referral. That is a great celebration. Our goal this year is 100%. Ask your child what the six pillars of CC! are. They are T-R-R-F-C-C! Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring and Citizenship.
All teachers will utilizing the Second Step program during their class meetings. This is the time we focus on our social and emotional learning each day. Of course we support the whole child all day; however, scheduling a specific time each day to focus on our SEL standards is very important for each's child's healthy growth and development. We will be sharing more information with you soon.
Enjoy the remainder of the Captain's Log. If you have any questions, please contact us.
Mr. Owen Wavrinek, Our school's namesake.

Navigating to Port Success!
CHARACTER COUNTS! Wise Word of the Week! Moving From Character Education to Character Action!
Throughout our journey we will focus on a "Wise Word" each week. Yes, we will learn and discuss the characteristics and behaviors that someone may exhibit that shows he/she has internalized the meaning of the word.
Starting with character education and moving to character action is not a year-long journey, it is a life-long journey. We want our passengers to about character education, but more importantly we want our passengers to apply these character traits in their daily lives.
I invite you to team with us in this journey by looking for your child applying these positive characteristics in their lives outside of school. We'd enjoy hearing from you.

Owen PTA Fall Fundraiser is a MUST SEE! Saturday, September 14th 7:00-1:30
We are so excited about our 17th Annual Owen Children's' Fall Resale. The resale is held on Saturday, Sept. 14th from 7:00 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. in the gymnasium, stage and multi-purpose room. No more selling gift wrap or candy we don’t need in order to support our school! Find anything you can imagine for children here. Gently used clothes from infant to preteen. Books, bikes, strollers, cribs, electronics, sports equipment, toys, Halloween costumes, shoes, room decor, holiday wear and more! There are over 40,000 items to choose from. Bring a wagon or laundry basket because I guarantee you will go home with something your child needs or wishes for.
In order to fund all of the PTA’s programs and events this year we are counting on raising $20,000. The PTA supports every child at Owen! If you can't make the resale, a donation to the school would be greatly appreciated. Please make checks payable to the Owen PTA. Your child can bring it to the main office at Owen.
The students and staff appreciate your support and thank you in advance for your generosity.
If you have any questions or need more information, contact the school or our Owen PTA.
Keeping Everyone Safe in 2019
1. Follow the Crossing Guard’s traffic directions. Crossing guards are an
extension of the Naperville Police Department. They may stop and direct traffic when needed at our crossing area.
2. Follow the directions of the Owen staff members who are outside during arrival and dismissal at all times. They are there to ensure everyone’s safety.
4. Follow the school speed limit and no parking signs.
5. All curbs painted RED are FIRE LANES. Do not park in these areas. No parking signs are posted. This includes the entire curb that runs along the circle drive closest to the building.
6. NO cell phone usage while in your vehicle on school property or in a school zone while driving. There is a minimum fine of $375.
8. Have your window sign placed on the dashboard inside the passenger side window for staff members to see when using the car pick up line after school.
9. EVERY TIME you make a change in how your child is going home that is
different from what you filled out on our arrival/dismissal form, CONTACT the office and write a note for your child’s teacher.
10. Do not bring animals on school property. Even though we love our pets, they can be a distraction in the car, and many children and adults are frightened and allergic to them.
11. Do not drive around a bus that has the stop sign extended ever. This includes when the bus is stopped in the circle drive or parking lot.
Thank you for following the laws and school safety procedures. We must keep everyone’s safety in mind when coming to and from school.
