Brrrr, it's cold outside!! Good thing we are now selling sweatshirts to keep you warm! For only $25 this warm crew neck can be yours. Just a heads up, the sweatshirts might run slightly small so you might want to consider ordering a size up. Please be sure to fill out both the Google Form and PayPal information so we can order your sweatshirt (we cannot order yours unless both are filled out). You do not need a PayPal account to make a purchase, instead click on "pay with debit or credit card." Also, if you pay for the sweatshirt with a credit card that is not under your name PLEASE let me know to prevent any form of confusion.

PD In Your Own Voice-Wednesday 10:00am; 3:00pm
In Our Own Voice is a program sponsored by the National Alliance on Mental Illness, in which individuals in recovery from mental illness share their stories and a short dvd. It is designed to educate the public about the nature of mental disorders and to reduce stigma against those living with them. The US Surgeon General estimates that 1 in 5 Americans deals with a mental illness in any given year.
The age of onset for many mental illnesses is adolescence through young adulthood, often due to stress caused by peer pressure, academic challenges, and assuming more responsibility. Ninety percent of suicides are associated with mental illness, and suicide is the 3rd leading cause of death for individuals aged 10 to 24. Within this age group, school personnel are on the front lines for recognizing changes in behavior and potential for self-harm.
Teachers are also key in promoting acceptance of those who suffer, and reducing the stigma associated with common disorders such as depression and anxiety. By modeling a non-judgmental and understanding attitude, they can influence children and young adults to seek treatment without shame.
Laura Anne Middlesteadt is a certified IOOV presenter. She has given more than 60 presentations to a variety of audiences, and has been a speaker at the Annual Conference for NAMI North Carolina in Raleigh as well as the Western Regional Conference in Asheville. She was a keynote speaker at Chapel Hill High’s annual “Tiger Day” in May 2013, presenting to the entire student body.

Dance Marathon
Hey y’all! I hope this semester is off to a great start! Dance Marathon is quickly approaching, and we wanted to send out a couple of reminders:
Dance Marathon is Saturday, February 24th, 2018 at 10am at Legends
This is a 15-hour dance party that raises money for Parent to Parent and Western Youth Network (you are asked to stay the full 15 hours in order to support these organizations)
You can register here: https://www.firstgiving.com/asudancemarathon/appal
Registration is $10 (for the t-shirt). After that, you are asked to share your page and attempt to raise $150- feel free to raise more if you can! Remember, you do not have to raise the full amount in order to participate, but we encourage you to raise as much as possible!
Remember to sign up with App Ed! You are able to select a ‘team’ and we would love for you to register with us! Just type in “Appalachian Educators” and it should pop up!
The themes for DM will be announced within the next couple of weeks. To see what the themes will be make sure to follow @appstatedm on Instagram! They will also be giving away prizes for those that guess the themes correctly, so don’t miss out!
Morale Dancers!!! This is a GREAT way to be involved if you are unable to sign up for the entire event. Morale Dancers pay $10 to come to Dance Marathon at 10pm. Their job is to boost up the energy for the last couple of hours and make sure that those who have been moving for almost 15 hours are still having a great time and still moving! Tickets for morale dancers will go on sale in the next week or two and I will be sure to send an email out when they are available!
This event is an AMAZING event: between dancing with your friends, eating great food, and, most importantly, raising money for two great local organizations, we promise you’ll have the best time!
If you have any questions or need help registering please do not hesitate to email me (washcosg@appstate.edu) or anyone on Dance Marathon Committee! The ACT Office also has a lot of great information on this event, so feel free to stop by there, as well!
