Principal's Message
In February CGES will host a virtual African American Read In event in honor of African American History Month. Any parent that would like to read a book to a class should contact Ms Krystal Phauls by January 2021. We appreciate your support.
Kudos to our students for working on their interventions three times a week! We will continue to acknowledge students that meet the expectations for Dreambox, IRead and IReady! We had a blast dancing in December to celebrate students.

Classroom Updates
Pre-K
Kindergarten
Reading:
We are currently on Unit 2 learning the sight words go, see, and in. Our Kindergarten classes are understanding how to spell and use these words in a sentence. They’ve shown progress in identifying these words in a story and being able to retell a story. We are also learning that Every Story Has Characters. The classes are able to identify characters, settings, and events from a story. Along with this we are learning how to write the letter T and identify its sound in a word.
Math:
We are in Unit 6. We are learning how to add and subtract using numbers and manipulatives. The classes are able to solve story problems for addition and subtraction. We are also using sentence frames to help the students learn how to solve problems and understand how they retrieved their answers. We use vocabulary words to help students understand words such as difference and sum, while also using mathematical symbols such as +, -, and =. Next month we will begin working on 3d shapes.
First Grade
RELA:
We will be continuing our unit Many Kinds of Characters with our focus on How do we learn about characters? Students will be learning all about the characters in the books we will be reading throughout this unit focusing on what they think, say, and do. They will be working on writing their very own narratives throughout the month, we are looking forward to seeing where their imaginations will take them.
Math:
We will be finishing up our unit on Measuring and Time to begin our next unit which is Problems with Unknowns within 20. We will be working to determine if problems are addition or subtraction, how they are related, and how to solve them. Family Letter
Second Grade
READING:
Students will be able to create connections between the text and themselves, other text, and the world.
Students will use the academic phrase this me reminds of, this makes me think of and I learned that to make connections between the text and themselves, other text and the world in complete past tense sentences
Describe how characters in a story respond to major events and challenges.
Use information gained from the illustrations and words in a print or digital text to demonstrate understanding of its characters, setting, or plot.
Identify the main purpose of a text, including what the author wants to answer, explain, or describe.
Read grade-level text orally with accuracy, appropriate rate, and expression on successive readings.
Use context to confirm or self-correct word recognition and understanding, rereading as necessary.
Math:
We will be finishing up Unit 2.5
I CAN solve real world one-step subtraction problems within 100 using tools such as base-10 blocks, open number lines, and hundred charts involving situations of take-from-result unknown and compare-difference unknown.
I CAN fluently add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies.
I CAN fluently add and subtract within 100 using strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction.
I CAN explain why addition and subtraction strategies work, using place value and the properties of operations.
Starting Unit 2.6
I CAN make sense of one-step word problems (adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing) with unknowns in any place by analyzing language, making drawings such as tape diagrams, and writing equations.
I CAN solve addition and subtraction problems within 100 using tools such as base ten blocks, Hundred Charts, Number lines, and an understanding of place value and the properties of operations.
I CAN continue to build toward paper and pencil fluency with addition and subtraction within 100 based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction.
I CAN use addition and subtraction within 100 to solve word problems involving lengths and money.
Third Grade
Reading:
We will continue our third grade Module 9 reading all things Food and Farming. Our story this week is, "It's Our Garden". Our students love this story and finding they are connecting with this subject. We are using this story to help them to build new skills in opinion writing.
Math:
As we continue to work on Associative and Distributive Property, we're discovering fun ways to learn math. I introduced "Math Pixel Art" to the students and we have been having a ball intertwining our love for creating beautiful art while reviewing critical mathematical concepts!
Fourth Grade
Fifth Grade
Math:
We are working on Dividing Decimals beginning next week. The standard is 5.NBT.A.2 and 5.NBT.B.7. Students will have practice on using base ten blocks to divide. On Wednesday they will take the formative checkpoint.
Science:
We will be exploring Stream Restoration and working on Humans and Earth Case Study.

Federal Impact Aid
Parents/Guardians,
The U.S. Department of Education requires all school systems that receive federal funding to survey each student every year. The need for federal grant funds to support our schools is needed now more than ever.
We are pleased to announce that the annual Impact Aid Survey has gone digital! In order to complete the survey, parents/guardians will use their existing Scrib Order family dashboard account. If you do not have a dashboard, you will need to create an account before you can access the survey. Additionally, you must update your student’s profile page to the current grade level. We encourage you to complete the survey for the benefit of Clinton Grove Elementary School.
