MVHS Testing Spring 2021
Shortly after spring break we will be conducting a series of tests for all grades except seniors. The first test is CMAS (science for 11th grade). This is the only opportunity to report out to the state on science competencies and how our 11th grade students are doing compared to other students across the state. All in-person juniors are required to take the CMAS science assessment, and will not be attending classes in the morning of their assigned testing day.
On Tuesday, April 13th, 2021, all in-person Mountain View High School 9th-11th grade students will be taking the PSAT 9, PSAT 10, or SAT (11). Seniors will have asynchronous Google Classroom work at home this day. Afterwards, students may get lunch but there will be no classes for the rest of the day. If your student takes the bus, they may stay until the bus arrives at the normal time, but please be advised there will not be class, so no attendance will be taken.
If you have questions, please contact Nathan Gurrini, Assistant Principal - nathan.gurrini@thompsonschools.org or 970-613-7856.
Do’s and Don’ts
Bring #2 pencils, non mechanical
Bring a MASK!
Bring a calculator. (You cannot use your personal device as a calculator.)
Do NOT bring a cell phone or smartwatch. You will have to turn them in with your test proctor if you do.
If you bring snacks and/or drink they must remain at the back of the room. You may have bottled water with a sealed cap to keep under your desk.
Any personal belongings need to remain in the back of the room, or car, or locker…. It is easier to not take them into the testing room.
About the Tests:
PSAT/SAT - April 13th, 2021 - 9th -11th
All students 9th-11th take some form of the SAT. Students in grades 9 and 10 take the PSAT 9 and PSAT 10 and once they are in 11th grade they take the SAT, which is a college admissions test, but the state also uses it to measure student academic progress as a whole. The PSAT 9 and 10 are basically the same test but at grade level - which is also reported out to the state. We (MvHS) use the scores to see where kids are academically and use that information to structure classroom instruction. The SAT Suite of Assessments’ Career and College Readiness Benchmarks (PSAT 9, PSAT 10, and the SAT) is closely aligned to challenging classroom work of Mountain View High School and Colorado State Standards. It focuses on the key skills and concepts that evidence shows matter most for career and college readiness.
Benchmarks help:
Identify students who are thriving and require greater challenges.
Identify students who require additional academic support.
Inform instructional and curricular enhancements throughout the school.
Students may also look through the Student Guide for more information about the SAT, test-taking advice and tips, and practice questions.
CMAS April 29th and 30th, 2021 - 11th grade only
On April 29th and 30th, 2021 all MVHS juniors will take the CMAS. The duration of the test is from 8:30a to about 11:55a. Lunch will follow and then students may return to afternoon classes. Our 11th grade students will be assessed on progress towards meeting the Colorado Academic Standards in Science. Below is the date(s) students will be taking these assessments:
We ask that you avoid these days as much as possible as you look to schedule appointments for your child so that they will be in attendance during testing. Having said that, we do understand that some absences are unavoidable. In the event that your child will be absent on any of these days, please contact Nathan Gurrini at 970-613-7856 or nathan.gurrini@thompsonschools.org. .
The Colorado Department of Education has produced a document with details about the 2020-2021 CMAS assessments. This document can be found at this link CMAS Fact Sheet: What to expect for assessments in the 2020-21 school year
For a general schedule of these assessments in the Thompson School District, including the grades affected, visit our Assessments of Learning web page. Head to our Frequently Asked Questions page for additional information about assessments in Thompson School DIstrict.
Can parents excuse their children from taking the state tests?
Yes. State law allows parents to excuse their child from state assessments. This law requires districts to have policies that explain how parents may excuse a student from participating in one or more state assessments and notify parents of those policies. TSD excusing students from state assessments board policy.
Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions regarding PSAT, SAT, or CMAS testing this year.
ASVAB
MVHS is offering the ASVAB on March 31 at 9am for interested 11th and 12th graders.
Why take the ASVAB? It can count for the competency graduation requirement for the class of 2022 and beyond, is a great career exploration tool, and is required to enlist in the military (but scores are only shared with the military when a student and guardian sign the specific permission form). https://www.asvabprogram.com/

SAT Testing for Juniors
Hello MVHS Junior Students, Parents and Guardians!
All students at MVHS, and across the state of Colorado, take the SAT exam during their junior year of high school. Juniors take the SAT, which is a college admissions test, and the state also uses it to measure student academic progress as a whole. We (MVHS) use the scores to see where students are academically and use that information to structure classroom instruction. The SAT Suite of Assessments’ Career and College Readiness Benchmarks (PSAT 9, PSAT 10, and the SAT) is closely aligned to the challenging classroom work of Mountain View High School and Colorado State Standards. It focuses on the key skills and concepts that evidence shows matter most for career and college readiness.
Benchmarks help:
Identify students who are thriving and require greater challenges.
Identify students who require additional academic support.
Inform instructional and curricular enhancements throughout the school.
This year’s SAT exam will be in person at MOUNTAIN VIEW HIGH SCHOOL on Tuesday, April 13th, 2021. More information will follow in the coming weeks with specific details on what to bring, testing room locations, etc.
To help students prepare for the SAT exam, Thompson School District has purchased a program through Doorway To College, where students can access a link to online videos that will walk them through practice tests, as well as advice and tips for success on the SAT exam.
Here is the link and password that is accessible to each student 24/7 through April 13:
https://doorwaytocollege.org/thompson
Password: ThompsonSAT2021
Juniors that are learning in person will receive a Study Guide and SAT Workbook during school on February 22nd and 23rd. Juniors currently learning on TCO are welcome to stop by the attendance office from 8am-4pm next week to pick up their materials. Students may also look through the Student Guide for more information about the SAT, test-taking advice and tips, and practice questions.
If you have any questions about the SAT process, please do not hesitate to reach out to me via phone at 970-613-7856, or email at
