Some important information for this week....
Reviewing our Cougar ROAR
As we head into the new year, it's a good time to review our Cougar ROAR - our school rules that we developed last fall so that we all know what we need to do to be safe at school. We know that after awhile, rules can become stale. It's time to refocus and change things up!
Over the next month or so, classes will choose an area of focus (an area that needs a little "work" now that we're back to school). This might be how we walk in the halls, behave during nutrition break, etc. At the end of each day, classes will self-assess and give themselves up to 10 points per day towards working on their goal. Each week, we will tabulate and share our current school point total. Our school goal will be to accumulate 2500 points by the end of January/early February....and when we do, our celebration will include adopting a cougar from the World Wildlife Fund. If you'd like to review the celebration goal with your child, here is a link to the information: https://gifts.worldwildlife.org/gift-center/gifts/species-adoptions/cougar.aspx
Working towards a new year's goal + increasing our global awareness and citizenship = a fantastic Kawartha Heights opportunity!
Baby, it's cold outside!!
Although we've lucked in on the weather so far this year, a reminder that we are outside three times a day, each and every day (before school, first recess and second recess). The board policy is that we go out for 20 minutes at a time, unless it is -26 degrees or colder. Please make sure your child has warm snow pants, boots, coats, hats, and especially a pair or two of warm mittens. Outside physical activity greatly supports indoor learning - but we need to make sure our children are warm enough during this time of year.
Recess Guardians
On January 17th, Kawartha Heights will be welcoming a training team from Recess Guardians to our school. Mrs. Sampson will be working with Grade 4, 5 and 6 leaders who have been chosen through a selection process to participate in this initiative. Recess Guardians provide schools, teachers and most importantly students, with easy to use tools that encourage all students to participate and be “Guardians of Play” by demonstrating daily leadership to other students during non-classroom time. Selected Junior students will be provided with leadership training and tools to successfully lead students in games, collaborative activities that engage all students, while promoting physical activity, fun and a positive school community. This program is highly regarded and has had great success in many KPR schools. Interested students will learn more about this opportunity at a meeting on Wednesday with Mrs. Sampson and then will have the chance to apply to be part of this leadership program. Students selected for Recess Guardian Training will be informed by Wednesday, January 15th.
Math School Improvement Plan
As we head into 2020, our math learning is still going strong. For the first week and a bit in January, all classes will be focusing on the math strand of Data Management. We will then be back into Number Sense learning until the end of February. Keep your eyes and ears open as a new family math challenge is soon to be launched - in our front hall display case. Stay tuned for more information!
Milk
Due to current challenges collecting money from students, there will be no milk orders during the month of January. We look forward to getting this program up and running again as soon as we can.
Walk-In Mental Health Clinic
This time of year can be difficult for children, youth and adults. Did you know that there is a free walk-in mental health clinic available in Peterborough? Please see below for more information.
School Council News
Next School Council Meeting
Our next School Council Meeting will be taking place in our library on Monday, January 13th at 6:30pm. Please join us as we review our Parent Reaching Out Grant, as well as look for input on our revised Code of Conduct and Bully Intervention & Prevention Plan. We hope to see you there!
Hot Lunch Program
Many parents have been asking about our Hot Lunch Program. We have encountered several challenges in getting it up and running this fall (see Council minutes posted below). However, we decided at our last Council meeting to try a new online ordering system, directly from vendors. More information will be coming home very soon!
