Running Titans Press Release
It was an historic day at Louisville St. Xavier High on April 27th as the Running Titans continued their vicious attack on the track and field record book at the Brother Borgia Invitational. All in all, 12 of the 22 Collins athletes set or tied their personal best and two strong school records were taken down. At no other time in Collins Track and Field history have 55% of the athletes scored lifetime bests at one meet. Running Titans scored personal bests in a whopping 13 of the 20 events (65%) they entered.
On the girls’ side, the following athletes got PRs: Shelby Huelsman (200), Audrey Bucknam (800), Katlyn Blade (shot and discus), and Lilly Vest (3200). Vest was the only scorer for the girls, as her 3200 time of 12:16 chopped a gigantic 20 seconds off of her previous PR, landing her in eighth place. The sophomore’s time moved her to number 15 on the Collins All-Time List and the third best performer behind multiple-time state champs Gabby and Caterina Karas. Vest now owns seven of Collins’ top 30 performances in the 3200.
The boys’ 4 X 800 relay team of Gabe Vergara, Riley Turpen, Jeremy Yocum and T.J. Rawlins clocked their best time of the year by going 8:48. The following boys got PRs: Auntrae Johnson (100), Avery Farmer (200), Lucas Hershberger (400), Nolan Thomas (mile), James Solinger (3200), Cole Martens (110), and Rawlins tied his PR in the high jump, going 5-10 for second place.
However, there was more to come as senior Nathan Jacobs struggled with right sector fouls in the discus but did get off a throw of 154-2. This stood up to beat nemesis senior Cameron Sturgeon of Floyd Central (IN) by 1.5 feet. The throw also made the US Silver Standard. Jacobs owns a huge 23 of the top 25 discus marks at Collins.
In the shot put, Jacobs uncorked a big second throw of 50-8 to win the competition by two feet, one and a half inches over Sturgeon. Jacobs’ put upped the school record he set earlier this year by four inches. Jacobs owns an amazing 24 of the top 25 shot put marks at Collins.
Senior Rawlins capped a great day for the Running Titans as he had an amazing triple jump series (44-7, F, F, 44-11, 46-0, 47-2.5) which got better with each jump and culminated with the meet winner. His jump added almost a full foot to his previous school record set as he -won the State Meet last year. His 47-2.5 was also good for the US Silver Standard and only 3.5 inches short of the Gold Standard. Rawlins has been the most prolific triple jumper in Collins history as he owns 21 of the top 25 marks.
Head Coach George Sanderlin said, “This was a very historic day for Collins track and field. When you look at the high percentage of events and athletes where we got personal records or a season best, it doesn’t get much better than this. Having three event winners, two of which set school records (shot and triple jump), and two (discus and triple jump) of which met the US Silver Elite Standard, made the day very special.”
The Running Titans next meet is the Sundown Invitational at Oldham County H. S. on May 2nd. Then it is “Rivalry Week” as the Running Titans host Shelby County in a Dual Meet for Senior Night at 4:45 PM on May 7th.

The Kentucky Governor’s School for Entrepreneurs
WE BELIEVE THAT EXPOSING TEENS TO ENTREPRENEURSHIP ALLOWS THEM TO SEE THE WORLD DIFFERENTLY.
Opening our doors to the first group of teen Entrepreneurs in 2013, our mission is to bring teens from across the state into a three-week residential program, immerse them in a creative space and arm them with the tools needed to unleash their innate entrepreneurial spirits for the betterment of Kentucky. During the program, motivated teams of high school students develop a business model, design a prototype, and pitch their startup to a large audience and panel of judges. This culminating event is known to us as Demo Day. At GSE, they learn about the opportunities, benefits and pitfalls of taking a business concept from the idea phase to pitching it to potential investors. The spark of entrepreneurship is in each of us. But, to become an entrepreneur takes a unique mindset. Successful entrepreneurs must be determined and disciplined, confident and competitive and unafraid of failure. Our entrepreneurs learn how to cultivate creative thought, effectively communicate ideas, apply critical application, approach problems from different angles, consider customer perspective and turn failure into opportunity.

Free Online Learning Tool
ACT is providing a free resource now available to all students, parents, teachers, principals, and other educators. ACT Academy is an online learning tool that provides personalized, free resources unique to student learning gaps and aligned to the ACT reporting categories.
ACT Academy (OpenEd) is a collection of K-12 videos, games, quizzes, and interactives from publishers such as Flocabulary, NASA, Crash Course, GeoGebra, PBS, and tens of thousands of others that students can access via any computer, tablet, Chromebook, or even their smartphones. If students are using Google Classroom or Canvas, they can access ACT Academy by simply clicking on the single sign on button during log in or sign up.
- Resources are curated for quality, grade and subject appropriateness.
- Scaffolded content presented determined by student performance on diagnostics, tailored to each student's areas of need.
- Videos are typically followed by a short, formative assessment to gauge student understanding.
ACT Academy supports access for all students, including additional supports for English language learners and students with disabilities, such as a closed captioning option on 250,000 videos, text increase and contrast for the visually impaired, and answer masking and highlighting.
ACT Academy encourages parent involvement. When teachers create classes, parents have the ability to observe their student's classes, meaning they will be able to see what their student's teacher is assigning, and the grades their student is getting on those assignments. In addition, parents will be given their own Workspace, which acts as their own class. Parents can assign extra assignments to help their student with any standards they are having trouble with, and track their progress in a Mastery Chart.
Multiple resources are available for educators and parents including an ACT Academy Overview, ACT Academy Quick Start Guide for Educators, and an Invitation for Parents. For questions on the ACT test administration, please e-mail Jenni Larkins or call (502) 564-4394.”
