Friendship Family Newsletter
Principal Andrea Simmons & Asst. Principal Luz Rivera
March 28, 2019
Spring is finally here! This means that our students are spending more time outside, exploring the blooms, buds, and spring animals. We also have some fun events coming up. April is "Month of the Military Child," Tuesday, April 2 is "Autism Awareness Day," and the week of April 8 is "Week of the Young Child." We'll be planning special events, and sharing stories and resources as we are able to for all of these special celebrations.
Also, we are finally rescheduling our Movie Night! We will be showing The Land Before Time. Please feel free to have your children (or whole family!) wear pajamas and bring blankets and pillows. We will serve pizza, but you are also welcome to bring snacks for your family. Remember, TFS is a nut-free environment due to the seriousness of nuts as allergens for many children. It is our hope that at Movie Night, you'll pop into the computer lab to fill out our surveys, which help us with both our NEASC re-accreditation and understanding what we should work on to improve our school. We will also email these surveys to you so that you may complete them at home if that is more convenient.
We hope to see you at some of our upcoming events and/or field trips this spring. Thank you for being such fantastic partners in your child's education and growth. We look forward to continuing to support your child's development throughout the rest of this school year.
Thank you,
Andrea Simmons & Luz Rivera
Important Information:
- This is the final week for students to be entered in our lottery! If your child already attends TFS, there is no need to enter the lottery. If your child will be in first grade next year and you are interested in continuing in a magnet program, please visit http://www.rmms.k12.ct.us. If you live in New London, you must enter the NLPS lottery (http://www.newlondon.org); residents outside of NL may also apply, as NLPS is a full magnet program. Please encourage your family members, friends, co-workers, and neighbors with children who will be at least 3 years old by August 31 to apply to our lottery for pre-k. Children are kindergarten eligible if they turn 5 years old by January 1. Kindergarteners can enter in our lottery, as well!
- The Friendship Family Organization and "Franco in the Morning" have organized an amazing evening of comedy for parents and adults! The event is at the New London Elks on Saturday, April 6 at 8:00 pm. The ticket sales help raise money for the FFO which funds programming for our school. Please help support by purchasing tickets here: https://ffocomedynite.brownpapertickets.com/. The headliner will have a Netflix special next year, don't miss out on what will surely be an entertaining night!
- Did you know that LEARN provides Birth to 3 services? The Friendship School works closely with LEARN's Department of Young Children & Families for teacher professional learning, accreditation needs, and consultation with their team of experts. These same professionals are available to work with you if have concerns about your child's ability to see, talk, hear, move, eat, or play. This service is for any infant or child under age 3. Call 1-800-505-7000 and request services from LEARN. You may learn more information by visiting http://www.birth23.org.
- We have made some drastic changes in the parking lots at TFS that we hope are helping families in their quest for parking spots at drop-off and pick-up! The front section of the lot immediately outside the front door/crosswalk area is fully available to families. There are some Waterford facilities trucks that currently park near the facilities (brick) building, but we are looking to shift this. "Office parking only" signs have been removed so that the circle near the flagpole is fully available to families. Please remember that if you enter at the community center entrance, the spots outside of the last circle area are not for The Friendship School. These spots are for those accessing the Waterford Community Center, including the senior citizens of Waterford. Thank you for helping The Friendship School to be good neighbors!
- Friendly reminder to check your child's extra clothing to ensure it fits and is seasonally appropriate. All students should have extra clothing.
- There are several exciting school and community events happening that we are happy to share with you in the important dates below.
