The Gifts That Keep On
Falling in love with a book is not something you can plan and, as adults, it is hard to turn off the to do list that runs in our heads all day and give in completely when the right one comes along. But we can allow ourselves a little designated guilt-free reading time. In Michael Cunningham's The Hours, a young mother's apparently illicit visits to a hotel turn out to be an elaborate way to find a quiet place to read. As the mother of a toddler when I read that, I could completely relate. Fortunately for me, my mother was a reader who understood my need and happily babysat so I could enjoy a few uninterrupted chapters. As someone for whom reading is nearly as important as breathing, that time alone with a book was critical for maintaining my mental health.
It is the American way, these days, to be constantly in motion. This holiday season, along with the gift of books from our local books stores, I suggest giving someone you love the time to read. Create a readers' babysitting exchange, make a coupon for a chore-free Saturday, turn off all the devices during vacation and let your kids lay around in their pajamas eating candy canes and turning pages for a whole afternoon. It will not be wasted time. It will be a treasured gift.

Friends of the Greenwich Free Library Book Sales
Formed to help make the good work of the library possible, the Friends have done all kinds of things over the years to raise money for equipment and supplies like the computers loaded with educational games in the childrens' room. As membership has changed, events have come and gone but one constant has been the book sale.
Our current group of dedicated and enthusiastic volunteers consists mostly of very energetic women of a certain age and a few lucky men. They sort through an apparently endless stream of discarded books and find the best to put out for sale at bargain prices. They also send books to several outreach projects that work to get books in the hands of our neighbors.
Thinking about helping out? Here are some qualities that make a great Friend:
- Strong enough to lift books.
- Good duster
- Able to spot/smell book mold
- Open minded about all that comes in
- Good sorting skills - able to send books to recycling without guilt
- Looking for a chance to help the Library while hanging out with some great people.
