June 2019

As we approach June, I want to thank you for your partnership this year. It is hard to believe that the end of the school year is upon us. A special thank you to the PTO, USREF, and Youth Guidance Council. We are so grateful for everything that they have done to enhance our curriculum and programs throughout the year. Also, thank you to the many volunteers who have donated their time this year in a variety of ways. We hope that you found your experiences in Reynolds to be rewarding.

To all of our Reynolds Families, we wish you a relaxing, safe, and enjoyable summer. We look forward to hearing about all of your adventures when we return in the fall.

Move Up Day

On Thursday, June 20th, students will participate in Move Up Day. For approximately thirty minutes, students in grades K-4 will have the opportunity to meet their new teacher and new classmates for the 2019-2020 school year. Students will spend the remainder of the day with their current teacher. Move Up Day is designed to reduce first-day-of-school jitters and allow students to be more confident and excited as they head into summer. Your child's class assignment will be printed on their report card. The report card will be sent home on Thursday, June 20th.

Service Projects at Reynolds School

During the month of June, all Reynolds students will participate in service learning experiences. Our Kindergarten students will be making Kindness Rocks that they will paint at school. With their families, we ask that you find a place in the community to put your rock to spread kindness throughout Upper Saddle River for residents to find. Our first graders made their own reusable snack bags and will be giving them to our incoming Kindergarten students on their visitation day. This will be a welcome to our new students and also an extension of our Green Week initiative to reuse, reduce, and recycle. Our second grade students will be continuing our birthday box project. The students are working together to plan for this student collection in order to provide birthdays to local children that are in need of support. We are so excited to see the variety of service projects that each grade level has embraced and hope that these will be meaningful experiences that our students will remember and build upon.

Summer Reading

"Summer Slide" is the tendency for students to lose some of the achievement gains they have made over the school year. This can especially be true for more reluctant readers. In order to prevent or limit summer slide, children should spend time reading throughout the summer. Choosing a variety of just right books is a great start. We will provide a reading list in your summer packet to help. Encourage children to read something every day and spend time reading aloud. Reading aloud builds comprehension skills and expands experience with texts.

It is also a great idea to take advantage of enriching experiences such as summer camps, time with family, and trips to museums, parks, and libraries.
