CDS - First Program
The Weekly Word from CDS FP - October 7-October 11, 2019
Mr. Hill's Missive
Hello First Program Community,
It was an excellent week of learning that finished off with our annual Jog-a-fest. Thank you so much to all families who were able to join us. It is that much more special for the students when moms and dads are there. Mr. Tronsgard does an excellent job planning and executing the event, and we will hear more about the Jog-a-fest and see more pictures, next week. Thanks also to Ms. Kim for sharing info with the parents in the morning regarding our FP House program. We are already talking about how we can tweak things for next year, and we are looking to have it on Hangul day so that more parents can attend more easily.
This week we will be sending out a specific message with Parent Teacher Conference details including the sign-up sheet. Information will be emailed to you.
Please see the link below to enjoy the newest episode of FPTV!
Yearbook photos continue to be taken. The students in the yearbook lab have been doing a fantastic job so far thanks to their hard work and the guidance of Ms. Fursova. Please see your child’s Seesaw about dates for your child’s photos.
Please be sure to see our calendar or the Dates to Know section below. Eight of the last ten October school days have something special about them - a very busy end to the month! Please be reminded that next Monday is an inservice day for teachers which means students do not attend school. Parents are invited to school two days next week: Wednesday for Parent Teacher Conferences, and Friday for the G3 G4 Drama performances. We look forward to seeing you - often!
Educationally Yours,
Mr. Hill
Director of First Program

In the Spotlight
This week we are featuring Art and Grade 2.
Art with Mr. Read
In art, 4th grade students take turns drawing and modeling different poses to prepare for a multi-figure composition based on the artwork of Keith Haring. Their finished compositions showcase the principles of design: emphasis, unity, contrast, movement, proportion, balance and pattern.
Grade 2 with Ms. Mahomed
Second graders have been using their critical thinking to come up with guess-the-number riddles during math class. Students have been challenged to rethink math problems by having to write their own. It was definitely something new for them, but they’ve had such a fun time challenging their friends with new riddles! They have been thinking of 2 or 3 digit numbers and then writing clues that their peers can use to solve them.
Students began the riddle process by first solving some math riddles on their own. Next they dissected the details that the clues give us. The clues always tell us if a number is even or odd, how many digits it has, and tells us if a digit is greater than, less than, or equal to another digit. After they had developed an understanding of how to solve these riddles, they then began to come up with riddles of their own. This will become a part of our term 1 math project next week! We will be making a game out of all the questions that students write and challenging students to solve all of the riddles!
