The lyrics

The Battle Cry of Freedom

Yes we'll rally round the flag, boys, we'll rally once again,[3]

Shouting the battle cry of freedom,[3]

We will rally from the hillside, we'll gather from the plain,[3]

Shouting the battle cry of freedom![3]

(Chorus)

The Union forever! Hurrah, boys, hurrah![3]

Down with the traitors, up with the stars;[3]

While we rally round the flag, boys, we rally once again,[3]

Shouting the battle cry of freedom![3]

We are springing to the call of our brothers gone before,[3]

Shouting the battle cry of freedom![3]

And we'll fill our vacant ranks with a million freemen more,[3]

Shouting the battle cry of freedom![3]

(Chorus)

We will welcome to our numbers the loyal, true and brave,[3]

Shouting the battle cry of freedom![3]

And although they may be poor, not a man shall be a slave,[3]

Shouting the battle cry of freedom![3]

(Chorus)

So we're springing to the call from the East and from the West,[3]

Shouting the battle cry of Freedom;[3]

And we'll hurl the rebel crew from the land we love best,[3]

Shouting the battle cry of Freedom.[3]

(Chorus)The Battle Cry of Freedom

Yes we'll rally round the flag, boys, we'll rally once again,[3]

Shouting the battle cry of freedom,[3]

The meaning

The song means the Union soldiers are raising the flag.

They are fighting for freedom.

They are fighting from a hill or behind a hill.

They are yelling for the Union.

They want to take down the traitors from the South and raise the flag as one nation.

They will go to where their fellow soldiers have died and fight for them.

They will welcome new soldiers that are good men.

They will free the slaves that are poor.

They are responding to the call of their captains to fight wherever they need to be.

They will kick the rebels from the U.S.
