Kodiak High School Wrestling – Lancer Smith Memorial Tournament Summary:
The Curtis Menard Sports Complex once again played host to the 2022 Lancer Smith Memorial Tournament. There were 891 wrestlers (77 teams) that went to battle in a field of both Division I and Division II teams. The biggest and toughest tournament Alaska has to offer held over 1,400 matches over the span of 2 days. Kodiak High School placed 30th as a team in the Varsity tournament, 10th in the JV tournament, and 15th in the Girls Varsity tournament.
Sawyer Stevens (140 lbs.) was the lone scorer for Kodiak and was 1 match away from placing in the grueling varsity tournament. Stevens was able to put on a highlight show in his matches and turned a lot of heads in the process; however, while leading his final contest 13-3, he gave up a costly reversal in the last 30 seconds of the match that lead to a fall in favor of his Wasilla opponent. Garritt Roberts (130 lbs.) was Kodiak’s only other wrestler competing in the varsity tournament. Unfortunately, Roberts drew a returning Division II State Champion in his opening bout and lost by fall. Roberts struggled to get his traction in the hostile consolation bracket and suffered a hard-fought 4-7 loss to a wrestler from the new private school, the Student Wrestling Development Program based out of Fairbanks.
The Kodiak Bear’s weekend was highlighted by Samuel Lopez’s impressive run through the 130 lb. JV tournament. Lopez’s speed and constant pressure were on full display in his matches leading up to his championship bout. His persistence never conceded as he managed to secure an impressive 16-3 major decision in his finals match. Also representing Kodiak was Jonah Stewart (152 lbs.), a second-year wrestler. Stewart continued to display his natural ability and competitiveness by claiming a 5th place finish, as freshman, Damon May (119 lbs.) showed great promise as he earned his well-deserved 6thplace finish. May’s willingness to aggressively compete against the best competition has shown great potential for his future as a Bear. Kaswel Chambers (140 lbs.) was the final entrant for Kodiak in the JV tournament. Chambers’ unrelenting tenacity and explosive double-leg attack helped him contribute his share of points to Kodiak’s strong finish.
Another highlight of the weekend came in the girl’s tournament. With a breakthrough victory over her Wasilla rival, Megan Cornett (100 lbs.) lead the girls with an exciting 4th place finish. After two years of wrestling against opponents outsizing her, Cornett has finally gotten the opportunity to show her skills against wrestlers closer to her weight - thanks to Alaska’s adoption of a new 100 lb. weight class. In addition, her love for the sport has undeniably been passed on to her practice-partner, Mia Crandall (120 lbs.) Crandall, a gritty first-year wrestler, has continued to show improvement throughout the season and wrestled tough in both of her matches. Hannah Finley (132 lbs.), Kodiak’s only returning state placer, also represented the Bears in the girl’s tournament. Once again, Finley proved her status as one of Alaska’s elites as she placed 6th in her weight class respectively. Kodiak’s final medal of the night was claimed by second-year wrestler, Ariadna Sorto-Chicas (185 lbs.). Sorto-Chicas represented Kodiak proudly and brought home a 6th place medal.

Introduction to Education Reading Buddies at Main Elementary
The Introduction to Education students at KHS recently began a Reading Buddies program at Main Elementary. With the guidance of Amy Childers and Cat DeVries, Wren and Mila began reading with individual students at Main Elementary. The Main Elementary students have been excited to read with their KHS Reading Buddies and the experience gives the KHS Introduction to Education students an opportunity to work with elementary students, gaining experience as tutors and pre-preservice teachers.
Wren is passionate about becoming and elementary teacher and is enjoying the experience of working with 1st, 2nd, and 4th grade students.
Mila has natural teaching tendencies and comfortably settled into the role of Reading Buddy.
The KHS and Main Elementary students will continue the experience in the coming weeks.
If you would like to know more about the Introduction to Education class, please contact Ms. Fuerst at nfuerst01@kibsd.org.
