Learning Updates for this Month
Kindergarten: We hope you all had a wonderful week off with your children! We are thankful to have them at West! It's so hard to believe we are working our way toward Christmas already! The kindergartners have been working very hard to learn all the letter sounds (except /q/ which comes later). Now we are learning how to use the sounds to read 3 letter (cvc) words! We are also beginning to use those sounds to write words at writer's workshop time. We are being 'science writers' and are practicing discussing/writing what we see/hear/feel/smell/taste as we look at real objects. In math, we continue to use 5 frames and 10 frames to help us picture numbers more easily. We are writing numbers to 10 and will soon begin going beyond that. We are counting to 20 forward and backward, and are beginning to count even further, learning the counting pattern. Our goal is to count to 40 now! We are also learning to listen to math stories and use objects to solve story problems, both adding and subtracting. These kindergarten brains are growing stronger each day!!
First Grade: This month, first graders are working on using addition and subtraction strategies to solve story problems. They are also using vowel patterns to decode words and read grade level texts. In Social Studies, students are learning about the past, present and future. Students are also working hard to create how to books in writing.
Second Grade: This month, second graders are working on creating and solving math story problems. We are learning a lot of strategies for adding and subtracting two digit numbers. We are also learning about shapes and lines of symmetry. Students are creating and administering surveys to their peers and learning to organize and analyze the data they collect. For writing, students are still journaling every single day to build their stamina.
EL: In EL, students have been learning about the following topics: foods, animals, farms, vehicles, families, and the water cycle. Students continue to strengthen their vocabulary using an online learning program called Flocabulary.
PE: In PE, we will have our end-of-the-semester, 8 minute running test the week of December 13. The students have been working their way up to this distance run all semester. Please make sure to send tennis shoes with your kiddos in their backpack, so they don't have to run for 8 minutes in their boots or dress shoes. It is also super helpful to make sure they have their water bottle with them that week. The Kinder, 1st and 2nd grade classes with the highest percentage of students running all 8 minutes without stopping will win a pizza party. In addition to this, the specials teachers are having a "Teamwork Challenge" for all of our students. The Kinder, 1st and 2nd grade classes that show the strongest sense of teamwork for the next 3 weeks during music and PE will get a special treat and a certificate for their class. They will also get their class announced over the P.A. system! Good luck to all the classes.
Music: In music, the students are working hard to learn a special song for the holidays! They will be recorded with their classmates singing their song for YOU! On Monday, December 13, we will have our day of recording here at West. Please have your student dress in Christmas colors! We can't wait!
Social Emotional Learning (SEL): This week in Social Emotional Learning, all students will be learning about how group members work together in a community. This will apply previous concepts about how to work in groups to new concepts about the roles within a community, like the community here at school.
Practice these skills at home using the following resources: Kindergarten, 1st Grade, 2nd Grade
