First Grade Happenings
Week of January 19, 2016
Students enjoyed this week's STEM Day activities! A big thank you to Bear's dad Chip for presenting to our class on the topic of chemistry. Check out all the excitement on our TWITTER page by accessing the link at the bottom of the newsletter.
Tonight in your child's folder you will find information regarding our upcoming field trip to the MN Landscape Arboretum. This will coincide with our science unit on "Seeds and Plants."
Remember, we don't have school on Monday. Have a wonderful weekend!
Our main character “Edward” from The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane continues to change as he is repeatedly abandoned, whisked away, or stolen. He begins to feel the emotions of love, anger and despair with each new home. While listening to the read-aloud, students are encouraged to ask questions and look for answers, both of which are essential to comprehension. They are also responding to the text in writing in their reader’s response packets.
Next week we will learn about the concept of symmetry. An object has symmetry if it can be folded in half so that the two halves match exactly. We will begin by looking at symmetry in nature. We will also review the skills we've learned in Unit 7 in preparation for our assessment. The skills that will be assessed are as follows:
- Polygon vs. Non-Polygon
- 2-D Shape Characteristics: side, corner
- 3-D Shapes: sphere, rectangular prism, cone, cylinder
- 3-D Shape Characteristics: flat face, curved face, vertex, corner
- Identification of Symmetrical Shapes
