Colt Corner
Colleyville Middle School
February 11, 2022
Colts,
I hope this parent newsletter finds each of you well. Overall we had another solid week for our Colts. I am proud to see the work and dedication of our staff and students as we continue to push for academic and personal growth. On Monday, Feb. 14, our staff will have a professional development day where our staff will continue to learn and grow to better serve our students, as we move them forward to making progress in the school year. With that said, Monday is a student holiday giving our Colts another extended weekend and an opportunity to rest, recharge, and have fun.
I want to take a moment to point out the adjustments made across the school district of our instructional calendar due to the recent snow days. The following adjustments were made:
Friday, March 11 will be a regular school day.
Friday, April 15 and Monday, April 18 are now regular school days.
Wednesday, May 25 and Thursday, May 26 will be regular school days with modified bell schedules for end of year exams. The last week of school schedule will be released closer to the end of the school year once it is finalized.
The instructional calendar information linked here was also released in the GCISD Update email on Wednesday in which I included for you below as well for your convenience. Thank you for your continued support for Colleyville Middle School staff and students. Enjoy the three day weekend, Colts!

Upcoming Student Holiday and Calendar Updates
Upcoming Student Holiday and Calendar Updates
Student Holiday on Monday
Monday, February 14, is a Professional Development Day in GCISD (excluding Collegiate Academy and iUniversity Prep), therefore students will not attend school on that day.
Instructional Calendar Updates
Due to GCISD’s recent closures because of winter weather and COVID-19, the following changes are being made to this year’s instructional calendar. NOTE: These changes do not affect the instructional calendars for Collegiate Academy or iUniversity Prep.
Friday, March 11 will no longer be an early release day. Students will attend school for the full day.
Students will be in school on Friday, April 15 and Monday, April 18 which were originally planned for inclement weather days.
Wednesday, May 25 and Thursday, May 26 will no longer be early release days, except for high school students. All elementary and middle school students will attend school for the full day.

Hey 6th grade parents!
We are on the fast track towards Spring Break and before you know it summer will be here! Please remember your student will need the Tdap and Meningococcal vaccines before starting 7th grade. These are often given during 11 and 12 year old well visits. Turning your student's immunization records into the nurse now gets this off your list of "to dos" for summer and makes for an easier registration process! You can view and print your child's vaccine records on file with GCISD by logging in to your Skyward Family Access account. Pick your student's name and then click "Health Info" on the bottom of the left column. Then click "display options" at the top. A box will pop up and click "Show Vaccinations". You can take this record to CVS, Walgreens, CareNow, or any facility or pharmacy who offers vaccinations should you not have a primary care doctor.

STAAR Resources
With STAAR Interim and Testing upon us, we are excited to provide you with video resources to familiarize students with the general tools, designated supports, and accessibility features that appear in online tests. Our goal is to prepare students, as much as possible, for testing day on the new, online platform. Find the videos on this site!
These videos were thoughtfully created by our Student Technology Ambassadors, our student interns. Feel free to share this site with students, parents, or teachers. There is also a button in ClassLink for students in grades 2-12 titled "STAAR Online Tools" that links to the site as well.
School Report Card (SRC)
Attached you will find a copy of the State of Texas 2020–21 School Report Card for our school. This report is required by the Texas Legislature and prepared by the Texas Education Agency. It is to be sent to the parent or guardian of every child enrolled in a Texas public school. The report provides information concerning student performance on the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR®), as well as information on student enrollment, class size averages, and financial expenditures.
The information contained in the School Report Card is required by state law and is briefly described in the enclosed “2020–21 School Report Card Definitions.” The report for our school may or may not have all the information described because the information presented depends on whether the school is an elementary, middle, or high school.
State law requires that the School Report Card display information about the state, the district, and the school. Where possible, the information must be reported by race/ethnicity and socioeconomic status of the students and must include at least two years of results.
The School Report Cards can be found online at https://tea.texas.gov/Student_Testing_and_Accountability/Accountability/State_Accountability/Performance_Reporting/School_Report_Cards.

February Parent Tech Academy: Google’s Family Link App
GCISD’s Parent Technology Academy is returning in February with a session focused on Google’s Family Link app. The free session will be held on Wednesday, February 16, at 6:30 p.m. on Webex. A representative from Google will lead this virtual session in which parents will learn about the Family Link app. The app helps your family create healthy digital habits. Whether your children are younger or in their teens, the Family Link app lets you set digital ground rules to help guide them as they learn, play, and explore online.
No registration is required, and parents can join by simply visiting www.GCISD.net/ParentTech. Shortly before the session begins, this link will direct parents directly to the Webex session. The live session will be conducted in English, with a summary of the session available in both English and Spanish after February 16.
The Parent Technology Academy is a place where parents can come to learn about current trends in social media, online websites, and tools their students use each day at school. This Academy is a place to pull back the curtain on the many apps and websites that students use on a day-to-day basis in and out of school. Past sessions have included Top Apps Parents Need to Know, Social Media and College, Understanding Google Docs, Internet Safety, Minecraft for Parents, Fortnite For Parents, Device-Free Dinners and more.

Students CHECKING OUT/LEAVING EARLY:
Reminders: Anyone picking up a student must be on the Skyward Family/Emergency List before signing out a student. Have your driver’s license with you as you will be required to provide identification at the outside intercom camera. Your student will be sent outside to you. Parents are asked to wait outside (or in their car) as the Vestibule is not an area for parents to meet their child. The vestibule is designed to be a secured area for safety measures.
Please allow plenty of time as students in Athletics or Lunch may take longer to come to Attendance quickly. Students will not be pulled from class until a parent arrives at school.
Any additional information can be found on the attendance page on the CMS website.
Thank you for working with our staff as we keep the overall safety and academics as the highest priority for our Colts.

STAAR Online
The Texas Education Agency (TEA) is transitioning all state assessments to be administered online by the 2022–2023 school year. To support this change, GCISD will be administering all state assessments online this Spring and is encouraging students to visit the practice tests site released by the TEA to prepare for online testing. For upcoming testing, students will be using district issued personal devices.
The online practice tests familiarize students with the general tools, designated supports, and accessibility features that may appear in online tests. In the practice site, there are features that may be turned on and off for students with identified accommodations such as text-to-speech and spelling assistance. Organized by grade level and subject, all 2018, 2019, and 2021 STAAR released tests are also available on the online practice site . Please visit this link for instructions on how to access the practice site.
To view upcoming online STAAR testing windows and dates, please visit our website.
More specific information about student testing days will be coming soon. Please submit a help desk ticket if you are having trouble launching a test.

Please read this message if your student is planning to take Algebra I or Biology I while in middle school.
Students who successfully complete a STAAR EOC assessment prior to 9th grade must also take a corresponding subject area SAT (Algebra I only) or ACT (Algebra I and/or Biology I) while in high school. These national assessment results are included in the high school's federal participation requirements, as well as, the high school's state accountability rating calculations.
Currently, the SAT is offered at school with no charge to students once between the spring of the junior year and high school graduation. For students needing the ACT instead, a reimbursement option is planned. The funding is provided by House Bill 3 and the Texas Education Agency.
