Lil Steamer Families --
Today on the playground, in the hallways, and in the classrooms the number of smiles, giggles, and joyous sounds was remarkable.
As we prepared for our Halloween activities, parade and parties, we put the pandemic to the back of our minds.
Our staff and students' focus was on FUN - interacting with Halloween themed activities and enjoying the social interaction with their peers.
I know I probably sound like a broken record when I praise our staff, but it is truly amazing what heroic effort they put in not just today, but every day, to make our students' school experiences positive.
And, to top it all off, it is refreshing to see our staff and students get in the Halloween spirit, let loose, and be silly. We definitely need more of that :)
Have a wonderful Halloween weekend!

Runaway Pumpkins in Second Grade
Students in second grade combined reading with STEAM this week! After reading the book, The Runaway Pumpkin, by Kevin Lewis, the students worked in small groups to design and then create a ramp to see how far they could make a pumpkin roll. The project was open ended, and the students could choose from a variety of materials. After a trial run, the teams were able to make fine adjustments to their ramp. They rolled their pumpkin a second time. The longest measurement was recorded. The students were AMAZED at how far their pumpkins rolled ~ and how far some didn’t! It was not unusual for the pumpkins to travel over 20 feet! What a fun learning experience for our 2nd graders!

The Box is Locked in 2B!
Students in 2B were pretty excited to see a container of Halloween treats on the counter in their room. Then they noticed that the box had chain wrapped around it and was padlocked closed! Of course the key was nowhere to be found! The kiddos learned that in order to unlock the box they would have to solve some math problems. The students had to solve different story problems in order to find the secret password. Next, they had to line up their answers and decipher a code! Finally, the students had to solve problems to figure out where the key was hidden. Once the first pair found the key, they were allowed to unlock the box. All of the students were able to figure out the solution, and all were awarded with the prizes! What a fun way to do math!
Pumpkin Painting in 2B
Thanks to the generosity of Alyssa Temple’s grandparents, David and Gail Sasse, students in 2B were given the chance to paint pumpkins for Halloween. Alyssa’s grandparents own and operate Gail's Pumpkin Patch in Beason, IL. They brought in pumpkins for everyone, paints, and supplies. The students had a great time designing and painting their pumpkins. As you can see, we have some pretty creative artists in 2B! Thank you Mr. and Mrs. Sasse!

Mr. Tenboer's Classroom
What a week in Mr. Tenboer’s class. To start I brought in my personal 3D printer from home so now our classroom can prints twice as fast! With the help of the new printer I was able to make fraction pies for the 5th graders to practice with and play against each other. This helped with comparing fractions with unlike denominators very easy, especially for our visual learners. One other exciting part was making a connect 4 board that contains sheet of sight words behind it for the students to practice as they play to see who can connect 4 too. Oh, the Halloween parties were a blast too. :)
