Welcome to School Year 21-22

Greetings Cardinal Families,

Welcome to the 2021-2022 school year! We are glad that you are joining us, as we embark on an exciting year of teaching and learning at J.O. Wilson Elementary School. To our new students and families, we are super excited to welcome you to our Cardinal Family, and to all of our returning students and families, we are just as eager to welcome you back and reconnect in love. Students, we look forward to seeing your academic and personal growth over the years on your cardinal journey.

After a year of operating in a virtual posture, and then transitioning to an in-person and hybrid setting for some students and families, we are excited to return to five full days of in-person instruction in the building. Due to the ongoing impact of the COVID-19 pandemic we will continue to implement mitigation measures as established by the district. This will include the requirement for all students to wear masks while indoors and on the buses, social distancing of at least 3 feet between students where practicable, and regular handwashing and/or access to hand sanitizers. All visitors to our campus will also be required to wear masks at all times. We will continue to implement mitigation measures as our district determines what is needed to ensure that our staff and student's safety and well-being are prioritized.

This year we will renew our commitment to excellence in all that we do, as we work to provide our students with quality instructional learning experiences, with the expectation being that all of our students can learn and succeed. We will continue to provide our students with opportunities to address academic deficiencies by providing opportunities and interventions aimed at accelerating learning. Our major initiatives for this school year are to build our student's literacy and numeracy skills, address the social and emotional needs of our students, and engage our stakeholders in the process of educating our students.

We look are looking forward to continuing to build relationships with all our stakeholders throughout the year and we encourage you to become active members of the JOW PTA and the Cardinal family. This year is going to be an awesome year for our school community.

Still SOARing,

Principal, Mr. Mitchell V. Brunson

Assistant Principal, Ms. Tracey Ndenecho

Assistant Principal, Mr. Sean Bellamy

Childhood Immunizations are Required for In-Person Learning

At 20 DCPS sites across the District, public charter schools, and community health centers, any student ages 3-18 can get the required immunizations to attend school in-person. Pop-up clinics are open Monday to Saturday through the end of September. You can see a list of all DCPS clinics and their operating hours at dcpsreopenstrong.com/vaccines.

If you already have an appointment scheduled with your pediatrician before the start of school, we encourage you to continue with that annual wellness visit. School clinics offer additional options for families who have had difficulties making an appointment with their child’s doctor for required immunizations.
