Curriculum Information

ELA- (English/Language Arts)

We are reading our anchor text, The Case of the Gasping Garbage. We are focusing on parts of a story and the sequence of events.

Reading Essential Question: How do readers understand characters’ motivations and the effects of their actions?

Writing Essential Question: How do writers write about characters and show the sequence of events in a story? (Narrative Writing)

Decoding: plurals (-s, -es, -ies), base words and suffixes


  • Estimating Differences
  • Subtracting 4-Digit Numbers
  • Subtract Across Zeros

In this unit, the children will be investigating properties of chemicals and using these properties to identify 5 mystery chemicals. As we perform each science experiment, we will also be working on “Writing like a Scientist”. The children will be recording their hypothesis, observations and conclusions in a Science Notebook. During this first unit of study, the science notebook writing will be heavily modeled for the students.

Last week we added water to our 5 Mystery Chemicals and observed what happened. This week we will add vinegar to our chemicals and record our observations.

Social Studies

  • Last week, we covered map grids, latitude and longitude and hemispheres
  • This week, we will focus on Continents and Oceans
