Message from Mrs. Langston
We are watching with anticipation as our mealworms are changing into pupas. We hope we will have some beetles before our Thanksgiving Break. In math, we are learning how to tell time to the 5 minutes on an analog clock. For the next few weeks, we will focus on narrative writing, which is learning to write a realistic story about an event in our lives from beginning to end. Each week, spelling words are becoming more difficult, so I encourage writing the spelling words each night at home.
How can I help my child with reading at home?
Several parents have asked me, "How can I help my child with reading?"
- First, there will be sentences from Letterland in your child's folder on the take-home side each night which review last week's spelling words. It only takes a few minutes to have your child read them to you. I will include a place for you to initial each night so I know your child has read them to an adult.
- Have your child read the spelling words on List A, review words, List B words, and List C words which focus on the phonics and spelling words for the week.
- Here is a fantastic link to decodable books your child can read:
https://www.dpi.nc.gov/students-families/parents-corner/literacy-home-digital-childrens-reading-initiative/online-libraries
On this site, you will find Flyleaf Books which we are reading in class during
small group reading. Please message me if you would like to use this resource and I can
tell you which book your child's reading group is reading for the week. Rereading books
is an excellent practice to build fluency.
- And of course, your child can continue to read books from our classroom library, our school library, or books you have at home.
