Top graduates honored
Valedictorian Owen Hayes held school leadership roles on the soccer, track, and robotics teams. As a participant in the Boeing Machining Tech Prep program, he works to turn engineering designs into palpable products. Hayes plans to complete a mechanical engineering degree at Purdue University. His career goal is to lead an engineering team based in robotics or mechatronics. “The most important aspect of my time at GHS, my faith in Christ, is the same thing that has sustained me for the vast majority of my life,” said Hayes. “Without it, I am well aware that I would not be where I am today, and I intend to keep living with that truth in mind.”
Valedictorian Kyler Pak is the lead programmer of the GHS robotics team and part of the Gladstone High School National Honor Society. He loves everything math and science related and is always aspiring to learn more. One of his favorite memories from school is attending his first robotics competition and meeting all the competing teams. He plans to attend the University of Utah pursuing a major in chemical engineering and minor in computer science. With his degree, he wants to support the environment.
Salutatorian Heaven Wallack has been very involved in the National Honor Society and 4-H. Both NHS and 4-H have taught her leadership skills, including how to take initiative and plan thoroughly to achieve the greatest outcome. She will attend Portland State University in the fall to complete her nursing program prerequisites, with the goal of transferring to OHSU to complete their one year accelerated nursing program. Her goal is to be a registered nurse who specializes in pediatrics or neonatal intensive care.
Lake Oswego festival to showcase Kraxberger artists
This year, the Lakewood Center for the Arts Youth Outreach Program provided printmaking supplies to Kraxberger's two-dimensional art class. As a result, each student designed and created a complex multi-color reduction print that will be framed and on display during the Lake Oswego Festival of the Arts June 25 - 26.
"All of Kraxberger's 2D Art students have been invited to an artists' reception during the art fair, and their artwork is eligible to be awarded prizes as well," said art teacher Audrey Delgado. "We hope many Gladstone folks will visit the Lakewood Center for the Arts during the festival to view our artwork!"
Two Gladstone grads earn Seal of Biliteracy
Gladstone High School graduates Alexa Ayala and Alessandra Armenta Lopez earned the Seal of Biliteracy on their high school diploma. To receive this state-approved certification, these students had to demonstrate high levels of language proficiency in both English and another language. Both students are fluent in Spanish.
"This is a huge accomplishment," said teacher Petra Hoghova. "“Being bilingual is a great benefit to an individual and to their community. Those proficient in two or more languages can communicate with people from different cultures and get information from multiple sources. On an individual level, bilingualism provides many additional opportunities and advantages in life.”
7th graders perform play for elementary students
John Wetten fifth graders got more than a tour when they visited Kraxberger this week. The soon-to-be middle schoolers also saw a performance of a play, Save Our Animals, that was written and performed by seventh grade science students.
Middle school science teacher Mary Parnell, retiring after 33 years in education, opened the show with a greeting. "Welcome to Kraxberger, one of the finest middle schools in Oregon," she said. "I want you know that we hold three things sacred here: learning, creativity, and accepting every person."
The play students created was based on what they learned about different animal species and the habitats they rely on, but the performance also included plenty of jokes.
"All the lights, cameras, costumes, props, backdrops, and pre-show entertainment were student created," said Parnell. "Earlier this spring we performed our show for first and second graders, and the house went wild!"
The performers thanked Julie Fox for her support of the show, also the Gladstone Education Foundation, which provided grant funding for the project.
