Welcome to GIS!

Start of School Information: Tuesday 25th January

PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

Kia ora whānau,

I would like to take the opportunity to welcome you and your child to Greenmeadows Intermediate. This letter is to provide you with information that we hope will help answer some of the questions you might have about how we do things at the start of the year.

Year 7 students start school on Friday 4th February, the day after the Year 8’s. The reason for this is so that we can settle the Year 8 students into classes allowing us to focus intensively on providing a smooth transition for our Year 7 students the next day.

This newsletter includes information about the following:

  • What happens on the first day.
  • Uniforms
  • Stationery
  • Healthy Lunch Scheme
  • Specialist Programme Contribution
  • How we operate under the Red level setting
  • Heads up about Activity Week

If you have any questions at all, do not hesitate to contact me. I am always just at the end of an email!

Have a wonderful Auckland Anniversary Weekend! It looks like the weather is going to be brilliant!

Ngā mihi

What happens on the first day?

A powhiri will be held at 9.00am to welcome Year 7 students and their whanau, along with any new staff. Due to the current RED level restrictions, this will be held outside and we respectfully request that only one parent accompany their child if possible. All adults will need to wear a mask. As this is a school curriculum related activity, there is no requirement for vaccination passes to be shown.

New students and families assemble before the powhiri at 8.45a.m on the courts outside the hall. There will be staff members available to guide you in the right direction and look after everyone! After the powhiri, Miss Sefo will introduce all the Year 7 teachers and let students know which class they are in. Parents are welcome to remain during this time to find out their child's class and to meet the teacher. We then invite you to a morning tea (held outside the staffroom) so you can get to know us all a little better. Due to the restrictions, parents will not be able to visit the classroom on the first day, however we have a Meet the Teacher evening scheduled for Tuesday 15 February so you may wish to save that date!

Keeping Ourselves and Others Safe when Returning to School

As you know, we will all be returning to school under the RED level of the traffic light system. We have a good plan in place that is designed to keep everyone as safe as possible from the transmission of COVID-19. All students and adults need to wear a mask while indoors when they are at school.

Only essential visitors are allowed on site. We consider parents accompanying their Year 7 student on the first day as essential! But we do ask that only one parent come. At all other times, parents are asked to drop their child off at the gate unless they need to visit the school office.

Follow this link to our Health and Safety pamphlet that we have designed as an easy read of the critical information we think parents and students need to know about at RED level.

If you do have any further questions, don't hesitate to contact either myself or Lali Sefo, our DP.

Healthy Lunch Scheme

Greenmeadows Intermediate is part of the Ka Ora, Ka Ako Healthy Lunch Scheme. We are trialling a new provider this term - Subway! Lunch will be provided for all students - there is no need for them to bring one. We ensure that all dietary requirements are catered for. Your child will be asked on the first day to let us know if they require a vegetarian or gluten free lunch. A sample menu is below.
Big picture

Stationery

Stationery packs can be purchased from the school at a very competitive rate from the start of the year. The form can be found by following this link. The easiest way to purchase stationery is to order it via our online Kindo Shop. I do apologise to those parents who tried (unsuccessfully!) to order stationery earlier this week and it didn't work! It is all sorted now. The stationery pack will be delivered to your child on the first day.

Alternatively, the office will be open for stationery sales on the following days before school starts:

  • Thursday 27 January 2022, 9am - 3pm.

  • Tuesday 1 February 2022, 9am - 3pm.

  • Wednesday 2 February 2022, 9.00am - 1.00pm.

This pack contains all the stationery items your child needs to start the school year. We do not split packs and sell individual items until Term 2.

Specialist Programme Contribution

In addition to the stationery itself, the school asks parents to pay $30.00 per student for the take home component of the school specialist programme. This can be also paid via Kindo, our online payment store, or by returning the payment to school with this form.

School Uniform

Our school uniform can be purchased from either:

  • The Uniform Shoppe

1 Ronwood Ave, Manukau

  • The Warehouse,

Cavendish Drive, Manukau.

We will also have a small range of second hand uniforms available for purchase up here at the school (although we don’t have a lot of large sizes - it is mainly Size 12’s and 14’s). Parents can come and purchase these on the following days:

  • Thursday 27 January 2022, 9am - 3pm.

  • Tuesday 1 February 2022, 9am - 3pm.

  • Wednesday 2 February 2022, 9.00am - 1.00pm.

We have quite strict regulations regarding footwear students can wear to school. It is quite simple; plain black shoes only. Please don't let your child talk you into branded shoes with flash logos - they don't usually meet the "plain black" criteria! In summer, some students like to wear plain sandals (black or brown) and this is great for the hot weather!

Heads Up About Activity Week - Week 4

Every year we start the year with activities planned to help students build relationships with each other and their teachers. This is an important part of the transition process. One year we have a whole school camp (this happened last year), the other we have a week of EOTC activities that happen both on and off site. At this stage we still plan to run Activity Week which will take place in Week 4 from 21 - 25 February. This will include two trips for Whanau Hubs on 22nd and 23rd February.

We have two trips planned for 22nd and 23rd February:

  • To the Parnell Pools
  • To Shakespeare Park

There will be no cost for these trips - the school pays. All students will be able to attend - there are no vaccination requirements at these venues as we will be the only school attending. More detailed information will come home after the first day. We will be seeking parent help for these trips (parent helpers will need to be fully vaccinated) so hopefully some of you will keep that in mind!
