More than 2 million U.S. middle and high school students have vaped marijuana, study finds

Electronic cigarettes are the most popular tobacco product among U.S. teens, but tobacco isn’t the only thing they’re vaping. A new report from researchers at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that more than 2 million middle and high school students have used an e-cigarette to vape marijuana.
That figure is based on survey results from the 2016 National Youth Tobacco Survey, which polls a representative sample of American students in grades 6 through 12. Among the questions the 20,675 participants were asked in 2016 was, “Have you ever used an e-cigarette device with a substance besides nicotine?”
One of the possible answers was this: “Yes, I have used an e-cigarette device with marijuana, THC or hash oil, or THC wax.” (THC, short for tetrahydrocannabinol, is the mind-altering chemical that produces marijuana’s high.)
Altogether, 8.9% of the students — or nearly 1 in 11 — selected this response. That included 12.4% of students in grades 9 through 12 and 4.5% of students in grades 6 through 8.
Extrapolating those figures across the country, the researchers calculated that 1.7 million high school students and 425,000 middle school students have vaped marijuana at least once.
Senate passes opioid, prescription drug bills pushed by Ohio senators
WASHINGTON — The Senate on Monday overwhelmingly passed a mammoth bipartisan opioid bill that includes a measure pushed by Sen. Rob Portman to make it harder to ship fentanyl into the U.S. through the mail system.
The Ohio Republican’s STOP Act, which he has pushed since he released the results of a bipartisan investigation on fentanyl being mailed into the U.S. last June, was one provision among dozens in a bill that included the work of five Senate committees. The House passed a similar bill in June, and the differences must be ironed out before final passage.
The bill passed 99-1, with both Ohio senators backing it.
The bill aims to respond to a drug crisis that took the lives of more than 72,000 people in 2017. Most of those deaths, said Portman, were caused by opioids. In remarks made on the Senate floor this month, he said fentanyl overdose deaths increased 850 percent between 2013 and 2017.
Portman’s bill, formally titled the Synthetics Trafficking and Overdose Prevention Act, was co-sponsored by Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio. It would require all packages being shipped into the U.S. from overseas to include advanced electronic data on exactly what’s inside the package, who’s shipping it and other information that is already included in packages shipped via DHL, UPS and FedEx.
The bill also includes the CRIB Act, a bill sponsored by Brown that would allow facilities designed to help babies born dependent on drugs to be reimbursed by Medicaid.
