December 10th - 14th
Highlights from our week:
Shared Reading - First grade continued the unit on Fairy Tales. This week we identified the main characters, setting, problem, solution, repeating phrases, and special beginning/ending phrases in Goldilocks and the Three Bears, Jack and the Beanstalk, The Princess and the Pea, and Hansel and Gretel. Our class particularly liked those stories that were retold by author James Marshall.
Writing - This week in writing included a retelling of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Students used story elements to put together a retelling in their own words. Students were assisted in this process by using a rubric for the first time. Students took the writing they began on Monday and then went back to it for editing and content details on Tuesday. Students continued to work on this throughout the week.
Social Studies - We ended the unit on citizenship this week by discussing justice and fairness. Students in our class did particularly well when identifying unfair situations and how they could be adjusted to be fair for everyone. This concept was addressed during our weekly social skills lesson about compassion.
Math - This week students worked with models to compare the lengths/amounts. Students identified the numerical difference between two tower models and used that information to create subtraction equations. Our class worked in groups to create various patterns within numbers using colored cubes. We ended the week with a group project to create a list of many ways to make the number 7. Unit 4 will begin on Monday.
