Our Arctic Cougars are taking the plunge this Thursday, February 1. Take a look at the below document for important information about the Polar Bear Plunge field trip.
Parents are welcome to drive separately to the plunge to see our Arctic Cougars plunge. However, students are required to return to school on the bus. If parents would like to come to the plunge, they will need to sign this spectator waiver.

Important Bus Update
Effective Wednesday, January 31st, Bates magnet bus 470 will no longer pick up students at Arnold Elementary School. That stop will be replaced with a stop at Broadneck Elementary School. Pick up time and order of stop will remain the same.
Pick up in the morning will be at Broadneck Elementary School and drop off in the afternoon will remain at Arnold Elementary School.

Attention all 8th Graders
Attn APEX 8th Grade Students
If your student is planning to re-enroll into their home school at the end of this school year, please let Mrs. McFadden (cmcfadden@aacps.org) know so that she can send you the enrollment portal information in March when it opens for the 24/25 school year. In the meantime, you are welcome to reach out to your zoned high school to inquire about high school courses/ programs. Your student will still participate in signing up for electives on January 30th with the Annapolis high school counselors. The chosen courses will be placed in their student portal so can be viewed by any county high school that they enroll in.

Tuesday, February 6, 2024, is Bates Spirit Day at MOD Pizza in the Festival at Riva Shopping Center. Everyone loves Pizza Night! Or treat yourself to a pizza lunch. The February PTA meeting has been rescheduled to Thursday, February 8, 2024, at 7:00 p.m. online. We will be planning the second marking period Honor Roll celebration and gearing up for Teacher Appreciation Week. We will also receive an update on the school from Ms. Hicks.

After-School Bates Girls Lacrosse
A girls after-school lacrosse club will be starting this coming Tuesday, January 9th and will run on Tuesdays through February 20th. We will be playing lacrosse, getting some exercise and learning new skills.
You do not need to know how to play or have any equipment. We have equipment if you need it. Come out and have some fun with Coach Fox, Annapolis High School's assistant lacrosse coach!
Visiting Artist - 8th Grade Social Studies Classes
Femi the DriFish has been a professional spoken word artist and slam poet for more than 10 years. Best known as one half of the spoken word/Hip Hop-influenced duo, THE 5th L, Femi uses his artistry to encourage his listeners to discover their own unique voices and identities in his writings, performances, and teachings. The Drifish also partners with the University of Maryland’s Violence Prevention Program, using his words to address matters such as violence and bullying in our communities.

Field Trip February 15, 2024
About 35 students from each grade will have an opportunity to attend a performance of The Drowsy Chaperone Jr during the school day on February 15. Students interested must submit a permission slip with 5 Bates bucks to Ms. Miller by February 9. Sooner is better since seating is limited.
AACPS will provide free bus transportation courtesy of the Bates PTA.
Permission slips will be available within a couple of days at the Bates Drama Club website, in the drama club wall pocket outside the cafeteria, and from Ms. Miller during lunch periods. Ms. Miller will also accept submissions during lunch periods as well.

Bates Student Food Pantry
If interested in learning more about our Student Food Pantry please have your student go to the counseling department to speak to Shauna Rykiel, our school social worker, or you may contact her through email at srykiel@aacps.org. Our pantry is currently open Mondays from 3:30-3:55 pm and Fridays from arrival through the end of advisory.
Donate Your Old Magazines
If you would like to clear out some clutter in your home for the new year, consider donating any old magazines to us. Just drop them off at the front office! We are planning to use them for an art project. Thank you in advance!

Annapolis Symphony Orchestra - $10 Student Tickets!
The Annapolis Symphony Orchestra is performing an incredible repertoire on Friday and Saturday, February 2nd and 3rd at 7:30 PM at Maryland Hall. The music includes Sibelius's remarkable Violin Concerto and Tchaikovsky's final composition, his stunning "Pathetique".
