MESSAGE FROM THE NURSE
Do I have the “FLU” or the “FLU”?
Influenza is an infection caused by a virus that attacks your nose, throat and Lungs. Influenza, commonly called the “flu”, is not the same as the stomach "flu" which causes diarrhea and vomiting. The stomach “flu” is also caused by a virus (often norovirus or rotovirus), but not the same family of viruses that causes influenza.
There is no vaccine available to prevent the stomach flu, but a vaccine is available every year for influenza. The vaccine may entirely prevent someone from getting influenza, or it can prevent someone from getting a very serious case of influenza even if they do end up getting sick.
Symptoms of stomach flu include vomiting and/ or diarrhea and sometimes (but not always) a fever. Symptoms of influenza include sudden onset, sore throat, cough, muscle aches, headache, fatigue, and fever.
Whether your child has the “flu” or the “flu”, students need to stay home for 24 hours after an episode of vomiting, diarrhea, or a fever over 100 degrees without medication. Your child may be feeling better, but they are still contagious and can expose other children and staff to their illness.
