Gallipoli
The battle that started the ANZAC tradition
What and where is Gallipoli?
Gallipoli is located in Turkey and was an important strategic peninsula (outwards sticking land) for shipping routes. On the 25th of April 1915, ANZAC troops were deployed to capture the peninsula and open up the shipping route for allied forces. It was expected to be a quick victory as the local Turks were thought to offer little resistance.

What happened at Gallipoli?
Gallipoli was a disastrous campaign for allied forces, and after months of stalemate and horrific conditions in the trenches, the soldiers were pulled out amid the dark of night. It was an important part of history for Australia because it was the first time soldiers fought for Australia, the battle occurring only 14 years after Federation.
